Reaching out to the community by teaching English is one of the most challenging yet rewarding services the Department of English can offer. Considering the ever-rising demand for proficiency in English language and communication skills in the job sectors, the Department of English had undertaken several projects under Teresian Rural Outreach Programme (TROP) & Extension Activities for the academic year 2016 – 17. Therefore, during the academic year 2016-17, the students of the department of English collaborated with the Rotary Club of Cochin Beachside, undertaking a programme for imparting English speaking and writing skills to over 200 students of two Government Schools in and around Kochi. The schools chosen were Edward Memorial School situated at Veli, Fort Kochi and Government High  School, Panangad. Spoken English Programme at Edward Memorial School, Veli was officially inaugurated on 18th August 2016 and the one at Govt. High School, Panangad on 23rd November 2016 in a formal gathering.Apart from these, the department had also been conducting Communication Skills classes at Government Girls L.P School, Ernakulam South, a project we began in the last academic year. The Teaching Volunteers were eight students from III B.A English.Two other extension activities also deserve mention here. Four students from III B.A English conducted a Graffiti Workshop at CCPLM School, Perumanoor, Thevara in association with Rotary Club, Ernakulam on 25th and 27th January 2017 to enable the students to express themselves through art and inculcate in them the spirit of unity and workmanship. As part of the Environmental Studies course, the II semester UG students of the department conducted a survey on domestic waste management. Each student visited 20 households and collected information regarding how organic and inorganic waste is managed and consolidated their findings into a mini project.
