Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics was established in the year 1948.

A high standard is maintained in the department when it comes to developing young minds. Efficiency in teaching couples with good moral conduct. The availability of the faculty to the students, even out of class hours is emphasized. The Department is also well equipped with new sophisticated devices for the betterment of the students in their learning process. The teachers are deputed to participate in orientation courses, refresher courses organized by universities, UGC, AIACHE etc.

The department caters to the overall development of the students through counselling sessions, various competitions, seminars, personality development programmes and special tuitions for weak students. Many students in the department are members of NSS and NCC and take part in camps and other social welfare programmes.

INCUBATION UNIT OF MATH ENTREPRENEURS (InME)

On 19th November 2020, the Department of Mathematics & Statistics of St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam celebrated ‘Women Entrepreneurship Day’ by inaugurating the Incubation Unit of Maths Entrepreneurs (InME). The meeting was presided by our Director Rev. Sr. Dr. Vinitha, followed by felicitations by our Principal Dr. Lizzy Mathew and Senior Administrator Dr. Sajimol Augustine M. A. The renowned entrepreneur and social worker, Smt. Roopa George was the Chief Guest for the ceremony.

The goal of InME is to promote the entrepreneurial skills of the students and alumni of the Dept. of Mathematics & Statistics. InME instils creativity and a business aptitude in its members, which helps in creating self-employment opportunities. We encourage our members to think out of the box for the betterment of society.

PROGRAMMES OFFERED

  1. B.Sc. Mathematics (CBCSS) Programme.

The department started in 1948 with its graduate course in Mathematics. The open course for B.Sc. Mathematics is Applicable Mathematics. The choice-based core course is Operations Research.

   2. M.Sc. Mathematics(CSS) Programme.

The post-graduate course in the department began in the year 2016. The specialization of the PG programme is in Pure Mathematics.

   3.  M.Sc. Applied Statistics and Data Analytics (CSS) Programme.

The post-graduate course in Statistics has begun in the year 2020 with specialization in Applied Statistics and Data Analytics.

   4. Certificate course on Mathematical Softwares.

A certificate course on Mathematical software, organized by the Department of Mathematics & Statistics began in the year 2018 with specialization in C++, Python, R and LaTeX.

Message from HOD

Mathematics and Statistics equip students with effective means for investigating, interpreting, explaining, and making sense of the world in which they live. From time immemorial, these two subjects have been in diverse fields of medicine, economics, computer science, physics, chemistry, psychology, social sciences, etc. Thus, it has become of great significance in developing curious minds for Mathematics and Statistics.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics of St. Teresa’s College has begun its journey in the year 1948. Over the last seven decades, we have grown in our expertise and competence in the curriculum. The Department has a total strength of 14 teachers, of which 8 teachers are in Mathematics and 6 are in Statistics. The department has a library and computers for the use of students.

The Department hosts several national seminars and intercollegiate programmes. We also conduct various talks from eminent personalities on various subjects to develop a mathematical curiosity as well as to lead successful careers. We also encourage internship activities, research projects and publications, extracurricular activities and skill enhancement programmes.
