World Breastfeeding Week Celebrations, 2020

World Breastfeeding Week, 2020 was celebrated from August 1-7,2020. WHO theme for the year was “Support Breastfeeding For A Healthier Planet” which well advocates the need for awareness, support and counselling in this regard. Increasing the rates of exclusive breastfeeding could save the lives of 8,20,000 children every year (UNICEF, WHO).

Keeping this in mind the postgraduate students of Food Science and Nutrition, Department of Home Science in collaboration with NSI and NetProFan Kochi chapters, developed an online skit titled “Ammathan Amruthu” giving important tips on breastfeeding and nutritional care for lactating mothers. The video was released on the official college YouTube channel on 7.8.2020.

An online quiz was also conducted for students, dietitians and academicians as part of spreading awareness for which more than two thousand respondents both from India and abroad participated and gained e-certificates. 2430 certificates were generated during this week showing the high appeal of Quiz as an awareness creation aid .

Postgraduate students of the department attended a webinar on “Counselling Women on Breastfeeding and Infant and Young Child Feeding: When and by Whom?” conducted by Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI) on July 31,2020. The activities and webinar provided great exposure to students and served as a means to reach out to public even amidst the pandemic.
