With an aim to improve English language skills among school students, 22 students from the Department of English, undertook a voluntary teaching initiative. The program, conducted at St.Mary’s UP School, Njarakkal, was designed to equip students from Grades 5 to 7 with basic sentence framing skills in English. Lessons were made interactive by turning textbook chapters into skits, blending roleplay and storytelling. Word chain games were used to build vocabulary and promote quick thinking and collaboration. The students were actively involved in the learning process and by the end of the session, exhibited more confidence in articulating themselves. To mark the culmination of the two-day session, students were gifted notebooks as a token of encouragement and support.

English Made Essay – Grammar Crash Course

The students of the department led crash courses in English grammar for students of Little Flower UP School, Cheranalloor and St. Mary’s UP School, Njarakkal in February, 2024. The students of the department designed a syllabus that covered basic grammar rules that were deemed necessary for a strong foundation in the English language. The course, spread over 3 to 4 days, were aimed at students of Grades 5, 6 and 7. Games and quizzes were conducted to evaluate the progress of the students.

The English department collaborated with SLATE for the following activities:

Session on Career Guidance – A career guidance session was organised at Fisheries School, Thevara on the 5th of January, 2024. The session was aimed at throwing light on the various career paths available to students. It also included a session on how to effectively use the internet to explore career pathways. The feedback provided by the attendees confirmed that the session had succeeded in acquainting them to new career options.

Educational Reel Creation – Fulfilling the objectives of the English component of SLATE, students produced 50 educational videos that covered some of the fundamental concepts of English grammar.

Script Writing – The culmination of the workings of the SLATE English component is a theatre performance by the students of select schools. The students of the department, along with members of the SLATE team, worked on adapting a script for the same.
