On the 19th of January 2024, as part of the Sr. (Dr.) Bertille Memorial Lecture Series III, the Department of Chemistry and Centre for Research, St. Teresa’s College (Autonomous) Ernakulam, organized a seminar in the AV room of the Science block. The seminar focused on the topic ‘Applications of Group Theory’ and catered to postgraduate students within the department. The distinguished resource person for this lecture was Mr. Shinu Koshy, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, St. Thomas College, Kozhencherry.
Addressing an audience of around 30 students, the speaker provided valuable insights into the applications of Group Theory. Topics covered included the determination of atomic orbitals in different geometries’ hybridization and identifying IR and Raman active modes in specific molecules. These insights not only improved attendees’ understanding but also offered benefits for competitive exams where this topic is crucial. Following the talk, an interactive session enabled a dynamic exchange of knowledge between the speaker and participants, resolving queries and clarifying complex concepts. This engagement proved to be informative and fruitful for all attendees.
The conclusion of the seminar at 3:30 pm marked the end of a comprehensive and enlightening session, leaving a lasting impact on the participants’ understanding of the applications of Group Theory.
