An international online conference titled ‘Scavenging the Material and Metaphoric: The Poetics of Discard Studies’ was organised on June 19 2024. Dr. Pramod K Nayar from the University of Hyderabad and Prof. Hervé Corvellec from Lund University were the speakers for the day. Prof. Pramod K. Nayar highlighted how ‘waste’ becomes material and metaphoric for the post-colonial land and community and exposed how literary narratives of the Global South gets minimized as ‘wastage’ of the modern, postcolonial world. Prof. Corvellec discussed different categories of waste including municipal, industrial, agricultural, and mining, and how they impact the environment. Using Sweden as an example, he highlighted the close connection between waste and economic systems- how it is an essential part of current economic model driven by consumption and replacement and has become a normal part of economic activities. The conference also served as a platform for several students and scholars to present their research papers, thus contributing to a discourse on waste and discard studies.
