On 12th September, the Department of English and Centre for Research in association with the Poetry Club organised a gathering to commemorate the passing of the poet, Jayanta Mahapatra. The programme was held in the II BA classroom at 2:15 PM. All the teachers and students of the department were present. Dr. Priya K Nair explained the significance of studying and remembering poetry. The usage of Indianisms and embracing Indian writing in English were also articulated. Ms. Anjali enlightened the gathering with an introduction to the life and works of the late esteemed poet Jayanta Mahapatra. Some of Mahapatra’s poems namely ‘Hunger’, ‘Freedom’, ‘Her Hand’, ‘Dawn at Puri’, ‘A Rain of Rites’ and ‘A Summer Poem’ were recited by the students. Gulzar’s ode to the poet was also rendered. The meeting dispersed with a eulogy, delivered by Ms. Esha to celebrate the life and legacy of Jayanta Mahapatra.
