NATURE STUDY CAMP – IDUKKI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

The department of zoology conducted a 3 days Nature Study Camp to Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, Vellappara, Idukki for the 1st M.Sc. and 1st B.Sc. Zoology students from 13th to 15th January 2018. The camp was sponsored by the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department and the Rotary Club, Kochi. A total of 39 students accompanied by two teachers, Dr.Soja Louis and Ms. Nimitha Ramachandran and 3 coordinators Mr. Venu Variath, Mr M.S Vinod and Mr. Renjith Kumar participated in the camp. The camp started from the college on 13th January with the blessings from the director of the college Rev. Dr. Sr. Vinitha.

The three days of the camp gifted the students with an experience of a lifetime.  The got the chance to understand and experience nature at its best. On the first day they visited the Idukki Dam and Cheruthoni Dam. They also got a chance to understand the historical significance of the dam.

The following day the students went for nature walk and treckking through the forests in Idukki, where they witnessed a large variety of birds, butterflies and other insects. They were also lucky to get a chance to witness the butterfly migration across the Western Ghats. The day concluded with a beautiful sunset at the top of Kalvari Mount, Idukki.

On the last day of the camp the students went for a nature walk followed by boating in the catchment area of the Idukki Dam. They also visited the Hill View Park, Idukki, with a wide variety of flowering plants, birds and also offering a panoramic view of the dam. The camp concluded with a formal function and prize distribution to the best camper, Ms. Mitchell M Beveira (1 st M.Sc. Zoology).
