The Department of Zoology in association with the Kerala River Protection Council, High Road, Aluva organized a seminar on ‘Kerala River Observance Day’ on 3rd October, 2016 at the Seminar Hall, St. Teresa’s College. The event was conducted in two sessions, forenoon and afternoon.

The forenoon session began at 10:30 am with a welcome speech by Sri. T V Rajan followed by the Presidential address by Prof. Sita Raman. The inauguration of the formal event was done by Prof. M K Prasad, Former Vice Chancellor, Calicut University. Following this, Mr. Babu Paul delivered a short message on River Day and a poem by Mr. P I Shankaranarayn. The felicitation of the event was done by Mr. Martin Loyal, Assistant Conservationist of Forests and Social Forestry. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Sri C P Nair.

The seminar session began at 11:30 am and it was conducted by the moderator, Dr. Shaju Thomas, Retd. Prof. Nirmala College. The topics covered during the seminar were ‘Vembannadu Backwaters & Climate Change’ by Dr. V Krupa (Scientist, CMFRI) and ‘Periyar Pollution’ by Dr. G D Martin, KUFOS.  It consisted of remedies and solutions given by a select group of speakers regarding the conservations of various rivers of Kerala. The session started with a Presidential speech by Dr. S Ramachandran. The different rivers spoken about were Muvattupuzha River by Dr. Shaju Thomas, Periyar River by Sr. Venu Variyath, Manimalayar River by Sri V Gopinathpillai, and Chaliyar River by Sri. M P Abdullah, Bharathpuzha River by Sri K K Devdas and Pampa River by Sri P K Premdas. This session concluded with a short discussion followed by a vote of thanks by Prof. Gopalkrishnamurthy.
