The Department of English, in collaboration with Manchester Metropolitan University organised an International Seminar titled Spectres of the Past: Gothic Legacies and Contemporary Critique on 15 December 2025. The seminar sought to examine the Gothic not merely as a historical literary genre but as a persistent critical mode that continues to interrogate cultural anxieties, unresolved histories, fractured identities, and ethical uncertainties across literature, art, cinema, and contemporary media.  The keynote address was delivered by Ms. Santhy Balachandran, Indian film and theatre artist , who integrated critical reflection with creative practice to explore themes of narrative, gothic and representation. An online session by Dr. Matthew Foley, Senior Lecturer, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, on “Charles Dickens, Orality and British Ghost Stories at Christmas” offered an international perspective on Gothic storytelling and cultural memory.  A panel discussion by contemporary artists & academicians, featuring Ms. Santhy Balachandran, Mr. Dominic Arun, Writer-Director, and Dr. George Sebastian, Assistant Professor, Newman College, Thodupuzha, brought together creative and academic viewpoints on Gothic narratives and representation.
