“BIOINFORMATICS: PROMISING ARENA IN LIFE SCIENCE RESEARCH”

Department of Botany and Centre for Research and Department of Zoology of St. Teresa’s College organized an International Seminar cum Workshop on Bioinformatics on December 10th, 2019. The seminar was inaugurated by Rev. Sr. Dr. Vinitha CSST, Director, St. Teresa’s College. Dr. Sajimol Augustine M., Principal, St. Teresa’s College, delivered the presidential address. Dr. Alphonsa Vijaya Joseph, Head, Department of Botany, and Dr. Meera Jan Abraham, Head, Department of Zoology also spoke on the occasion.

The seminar had two technical sessions. The first session was dealt by Dr. Siju. M. Varghese, Assistant Professor at the Department of Botany, St. Albert’s College, Ernakulam. The topic for the session was “Characterisation of Nucleotide sequence using Bioinformatics tools”. Hands on training on tools and procedures like NCBI-BLAST, Multiple Sequence Alignment, NCBI Sequence Submission, Phylogenetic tree construction and Primer designing were provided during the session.

The second session was handled by Dr. Harisree P. Nair, Associate Lecturer and Post- Doctoral Research Scientist in Biomedical Sciences, Anglia Ruskin University, UK. The session was on “Bioinformatics: Recent advances and Applications”. Identifying protein features using bioinformatics tools, Illumina sequencing data analysis using MG-RAST and AMR gene prediction from Whole Genome Sequencing data were handled during the session.
PG Students of the Botany and Zoology streams, Research Scholars and Teachers of various colleges attended the workshop and interacted actively during the workshop
