A cleanliness drive was conducted at the Department of English to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary. As October 2nd was a holiday, the cleanliness drive took place on the 29th of September. Students of the department took up brooms and participated in the drive to clean the classrooms of the department in response to the Prime Minister’s appeal for “one hour of shramdaan (or voluntary labour) for “swachhata” by all citizens as a “Swachhanjali” to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his birth anniversary.
Students devoted one hour from their total working hours to clean their classrooms to honour the Mahatma who is quoted to have said, “sanitation is more important than political independence.”
