A seminar on the topic “Fundamental Rights: Evolution from the Right to Equality to the Right to be Protected from the Adverse Effects of Climate Change” was conducted on 18.12.2025 to provide students with deeper insights into the expanding scope of constitutional rights in India.

The session highlighted how fundamental rights have evolved over time to address contemporary global challenges, particularly environmental and climate-related issues.

The seminar was led by Ms. Vidjealatchoumi V, Faculty Member at Government Law College, Ernakulam, who served as the resource person for the event. She delivered an engaging and informative lecture explaining the historical development of fundamental rights under the Indian Constitution.

During the session, the resource person began by discussing the Right to Equality, enshrined in Articles 14 to 18 of the Constitution, emphasizing its role as the foundation for justice, fairness, and non-discrimination in Indian society. She explained how the judiciary has played a significant role in interpreting these rights to ensure protection for all citizens.

The discussion then progressed to the expanding interpretation of fundamental rights, particularly through judicial activism and landmark judgments. Ms. Vidjealatchoumi highlighted how the courts have gradually recognized environmental protection as an essential component of the Right to Life under Article 21.

A major focus of the seminar was the emerging recognition of the right to be protected from the adverse effects of climate change. The resource person explained that climate change poses serious threats to human health, livelihoods, and ecosystems, and therefore constitutional principles must evolve to address these challenges. She also discussed how courts in India and around the world are increasingly acknowledging environmental and climate justice as part of fundamental rights.

The session concluded with an interactive discussion where students raised questions regarding environmental litigation, climate justice, and the role of citizens in protecting the environment. Ms. Vidjealatchoumi encouraged students to actively engage in legal and social efforts to safeguard environmental rights.

Overall, the seminar was highly informative and thought-provoking. It helped participants understand how constitutional rights continue to evolve in response to modern challenges such as climate change, reinforcing the importance of law in ensuring environmental protection and sustainable development.
