Department Activities


Family and Community Science (Home Science) offers a broad – based course that gives students exposure to ‘real life lessons “and skills to give them confidence to face the world as informed citizens.

The activities of the Home Science association for the year 2016-17 began with the inaugural function on 23rd June 2016. The function was honored by distinguished Chief Guest Smt. Maria Abraham – Executive Editor, Dhanam Publication, a hardcore ex-Teresian. 











  •  Talk on Parenting to prevent adolescent alcohol use on 8th July, 2016.
  • Dept of Home Science and Lourde’s Hospital, Ernakulam in collaboration with IAPEN, Kochi  organized a Regional Centre Workshop on Critical Care Nutrition, 9th July, 2016





  • Collaboration with Food Astha Company Ltd. Hands on Training in Microbial Analysis of Food for B.Voc Food processing and 3rd Sem P.G Students was organized in the Department on 19th July, to 21st July


  • Conducted a lecture demonstration on  ‘Sandwich Making’ by Ms. Priya Joseph on 28th July 2016. (Tricolour sandwich, Chicken Sandwich and left over wrap was demonstrated. Hands on experience for students were provided. Tips on Sandwich making  was also the highlight.)












  • The World Breastfeeding Week was commemorated from August 1-7,2016. And organized the   following activities in collaboration with Nutrition Society of India Kochi Chapter. 

    A commemoration lecture on ‘Optimum Infant Feeding’ was organized on August 1st,2016 .The speaker was Dr.Subhadra K.T, BPNI IYCF Counselling Specialist. We invited Junior Public Health Nurses(JPHN) of NUHM to participate in the session.The audience included selected JPHN ,dietitians and post graduate  students of the college. The speaker could effectively educate and motivate the field workers as well as would be mothers on exclusive breastfeeding. 






  • A Collage competition on the theme ‘Breastfeeding –A key to sustainable Development’ was also organized at the college during the Breastfeeding week. There was active involvement of the students.Cash Prizes and certificates   were distributed to the winners. 




















  • Entrepreneurship Awareness Campaign Sponsored by KITCO on28th, 29th  July and 1st of August








  • Demonstration class on Flower making,  by Smt. Chithra Rosemary on 3rd August 2016

















  • On 3rd August, 2016 Awareness programme for parents Children having learning difficulties was organized at  St Antony’s High school, Ernakulam
  • A camp for Assessing and identifying children with learning difficulties (4-15 years) was organised on 13 th August, 2016 at centre for learning difficulties, Dept. of Home Science












  • Organized one day seminar on “Hybrid Identities in Architecture” on 11th August, 2016, Resource persons are architects Anna Kuruvilla, Sherin Jacob, John Sajan, and Nimmy David









  • Payasam Making Competition In Connection With Onam Celebration Conducted On 7 Of September 2016













  • Ist Resource management and Interior Designing students organized and conducted Kid’s Fest at Rama Varma Club, Ernakulam on 24 September 2016.








  • In association with General Hospital , Ernakulam and Anoor Dental College , Muvattupuzha organised a free medical and dental camp for the elderly on October 18th in the Science block campus  of St.Teresa’s College in commemoration with World Elderly Day celebrated on October 1st.

  • Department in association with Kerala Farmers Association and Egg Stop Restaurant organized and 125 Home Science students participated in the preparation of World’s Longest Egg Salad with a length of 814.5 feet breaking the previous world record of 650 feet.

  • Organized a flag off programme by Sri Hibi Eden M.L.A for Kerala Jackfruit Awareness  Vehicle  campaign on 14th November, 2016 at St Teresa’s college.

  • A talk on “Nutritional and Medicinal Values of Jackfruit” was organized in connection with  Kerala Jackfruit Awareness  Vehicle  campaign on 14th November, 2016 at St Teresa’s college.
  • As a part of Nutrition Week Celebrations, a cookery competition for public was conducted based on the theme “Revive tradition restore health” on 1st September 2016.


















  • A talk on “Ayurvedic view on nutrition” by Dr.T. M Unnikrishna Warrior, Chief Physician, Kottakkal Arya Vaidaysala and Research Centre, Ernakulam, was also organized in connection with Nutrition week celebration on 7th September, 2016.
  • Ist Resource management and Interior Designing students organized and conducted Architecture Fest (Student’s competitions) at CERA Vanitha Veedu, Javaharlal Nehru International stadium, Kaloor on 16 October 2016.












  • “Emerging Research Trends” an interdisciplinary Research Fair  ReAP- 2016 (Research Advancement Programme) was organised on 17th November 2016. Director Sr.VinithaCSST , Principal Dr.Sajimol  Augustine and keynote speaker Dr.G.Arun Maiya, Professor , Department of Physiotherapy, Manipal University inaugurated the function. It was followed by a session on ‘Drafting a research proposal for funding’ by Dr. Manu Raj, AIMS,Kochi. ReAP 2016 served as a platform for students and teachers for paper and poster presentations.

  • Ist Resource management and Interior Designing students organized and conducted Kid’s Fest in association with Rotary Down Town Club at Elicium Hall of St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam on 18 and 19 November 2016.

























  • For raising awareness among people about “Child Abuse and Violence against Children”, I M.Sc. Child Development Students presented a street play at Cherai beach, Kochi on Nov 19 th, 2016 as part of ‘World Day –  for Prevention of Child Abuse and Violence against Children’  in collaboration with outreach wing of Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Kalamassery.













  • I M.Sc. Child Development Students, won IInd Prize for Skit Competition conducted as part of the one Day Workshop on “Dignity in Mental Health” organized by Dept. of Psychology, Yuvakshetra Institute of Management Studies, Mundur, Palaghat







  • To spread the message of happiness by giving, Ist Resource management and Interior Designing students organized and conducted Basket of Love at St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam on 22 December 2016.























  • Meditation class for the students on “Chakra Meditation For Deep Healing, Reiki and “The Five Keys To Success” on 12-01-2017 by Mrs. Rema.












  • Arranged a nutritional and wellness class as part of SSP Lecture series by Mrs. Priyadarsini Menon on 11.01.2017.

  • Conducted Annual Alumni Meet on 17-01-2017.Office bearers of ACTH (Action Council for Teresian Home Scientists) was elected. Scholarship instituted by alumni was distributed to 10 students.





























  • I MSc Child Development Students took part in the Balika Dinaacharanam Organized by ICDS- Caravan from Trivandrum to Kasaragod on 01-02-2017.

  • Arranged internship for 2ndSc Child Development students for two weeks in four different counseling centres from 5th December onwards. 
  • Organized a visit to French Toast, Panampilly Nagar, with fourth Semester PG RIMD students as part of academic enrichment in the area of commercial Interior.
  • Organized a visit to Brunton Boat Yard ( cgh earth hotel), Fort Kochi and accompanied 1st and 2nd PG RIMD Students as part of Commercial Space Designing.
  • Arranged internship for 2ndSc RMID students for three days at cgh earth Brunton Boatyard as part of the subject on Hospitality Administration from 21st to 23rd November.
  • Arranged industrial visit to Milma, Tripunithura for 2nd PG Food Science and Nutrition Students.
  • Conducted a documentary shoot of “Balgrama Sabha” which was the first of its kind in Nedumbassery Panchyat. It was UNICEF funded project by Rajagiri Outreach Service Society, Kalamassery.
  • Arranged industrial visit for 2nd PG Food Science and Nutrtion students to Milma, Edapally on 20th December, 2016.
  • Arranged a visit to “Pratheeksha” –PushpaGiri Medical College for 1stSc Child Development students on 9th December, 2016
  • Arranged internship for 2nd MSc Child Development Students at four counseling centres from 5th December, to 10th December, 2016 and 19th to 24th December, 2016.
  • Arranged an interactive session for 2ndSc Child Development students with Dr Sr Ruby, Counsellor at Prashanthi Counselling Centre, Edapally on 22nd December, 2016


TROP 2016-17

                Department of Home Science undertook Teresian outreach programme for the year 2016- 2017    considering the various needs of the community in and around Ernakulam. Sr.Shelsy Antony, Faculty member of the Home Science department was entrusted with the charge of TROP coordinator of the Department for the academic year.   It was decided at the departmental meeting   to involve all the students of the department both PG and UG to educate and to empower the community. Prior planning was done in the beginning of the academic year (JUNE)            and thus activity was allotted to each class.

  • III Bsc family and community science undertook a social outreach program on“child welfare for social welfare” on 27 july 2016 at INFANT JESUS SCHOOL, OCHANTHURUTH panchayath vypin.










  • II M.Sc Child Development students organized an awareness class on “Parenting to prevent adolescent alcohol use” at Infant Jesus U P School, Ochenthurath, Ernakulam, on 8th July 2016

  • I M.Sc Child Development students organised a class on Child Rights as part of  Teresian Outreach Programme(TROP 2016-17)  on  January 27th at an Anganwadi , ward No:88 , Kadavanthara  for a group of 20 parents on the topic Child rights.

  • Retro mode cookery competition on 08-12-2016. It was a fusion between traditional and modern dishes and it emphasized on newness of the dish.

  • The valedictory function of the Home Science Association was conducted on 17-02-2017. The chief guest of the function was Mrs. Thooshma Biju Varghese, a notable celebrity cook in Kerala.





















The activities of the association for the year 2015-16 began with the election of the office bearers on 03-06-2015.

Meeting of the Executive Committee Meeting held on 30.06.2015 have formulated an action plan to encourage and uplift our students to mould themselves in to empowered and socially responsible individuals.

The home science association 2015-16 works with the objective of the holistic development of students.

Our motto is : Educate, Empower, Enlighten.

Some of the activities are as follows.

Association inauguration The activities of the association for the year 2015-16 was inaugurated by Dr. Beena Sebastian, Director, Cultural Academy for Peace, Ernakulam on 1/7/2015. Through her speech she motivated students to live in harmony, spreading the message of spirit of peace and non violence.

Students attended a one day workshop on ‘Enhancing the standard of teaching kids’ on 20-06-2015 organized by Indian Trade Fair Foundation at St.Teresa’sCollege,Ernakulam.

A Revit Software awareness programme on ‘BIM – an Overview’ was conducted on 3/8/2015 by Shri Rino Rajan Joseph, Inter CAD, Trivandrum






Students of PG Food Science and Nutrition in association with RSSDI conducted “Diafest-2015” at Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium on 31st July and 04-08-2015.







Students conducted an art and craft workshop for mentally challenged students at Asha Kendram, Kochi on 04-09-2015.

A talk on ‘Better Nutrition: A key to Development’ by Dr. Abraham Varghese, vice president, IMA on 09-09-2015 as a commemoration of National Nutrition Week, 2015

The Home Science Association Inaugural Ceremony and Fresher’s Day commenced on 8th September, 2014. Dr. Sheelama Jacob K., Head of the Department gave the inaugural address. The chief Guest of the day was Mrs. Lakshmi Shenoy, former student of Home science department. The inauguration was followed by Fresher’s Day Celebration where various entertainment programs were given to the freshers with a hearty welcome.

The activities of the home science association began with an informative talk on nutritional management by a renowned person in Chronic Kidney Disease, Gurudeep Kaur, Registered Dietician from Department of Dietetics, All India Institute of Medical science, New Delhi and joint secretary, RD Board of Indian Dietetics Association. She demonstrated a tool for dietary management and planning.







As part of the association activities, an informative class was conducted on 2nd December 2014 by USHA on ‘Halogen Oven’. The class was cordially taken by Adrian, dealing with USHA HOME APPLIANCES.

As part of the Association Activities, a demonstration was  arranged for the students on a novel home appliance in the market, ‘ Halogen Oven’ a product from USHA  Appliances  on 2nd December 2014. The demonstration was well done by Mr. Adrian ,dealing with Usha Company Limited.

A former student of the Home Science Department  Mrs.Neena Thomas demonstrated quilting and saree making  on 7th January 2015. She demonstrated various quilting techniques . The class turned out to be very interesting and informative to the students.


On 14th January 2015, a class on vegetable carving was conducted by Mr.Joshy Varghese, who is a renowned Chef. He has been working with Dubai Heritage Hotels and Taj Group of Hotels for the last 15 years. At present he is a Faculty  Member of the Food Craft Institute , Kalamasser. yHe showed the students, various methods of making flowers out of vegetables. He also demonstrated interesting arrangement of flowers made from vegetables. The session lasted for 2 hours.



 The Valedictory Function of the Association was held on March 4 th  2015.The chief guest of the function was Mrs.Mary George, former student of Home Science Department  and Chair Person of College Union in early 9
0’s and also a successful entrepreneur. The prize winners of various competitions were felicitated by Chief Guest.
