EVENTS OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2016-17
JOURNEY TO DIGITAL BANKING
The Department of Zoology organized a talk for the 3rd DC Zoology students on the topic ‘Journey to Digital Banking’ hosted by Dhanalaxmi Bank, Shanmugam Road Branch, Marine Drive, Ernakulam on 21st December 2016. The seminar commenced with a welcome address by Greetta James of III DC Zoology. The talk was headed by Mr Ramachadran E, Branch Manager, Dhanalaxmi Bank. Mr Prakash C and Mr Ananthu, Representatives of Dhanalaxmi Bank were also present. The seminar specified on the evolution of India Banking to a digital era. They highlighted the current monetary scenario, various types of plastic currency and how to effectively go cashless. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Rhea Mohan Thoppil of III DC Zoology.
VLCC CAREER GUIDANCE CLASS
The Department of Zoology in association with VLCC Institute of Beauty and Nutrition, Kerala, conducted an informative session on Skin Care and Job Options applicable to college students. The session was conducted on 20th December, 2016 for the 3rd year students. The session commenced with an introductory speech by Ms Rajalaksmi, Head of VLCC Institute, Kochi followed by a skin care programme by Dr. Reshma Jaffer, Consultant dermatologist at VLCC. Two students studying at the institute shared their advice and tips on how to protect one’s skin. The session further focused on the demerits of private jobs and how such jobs can have an ill effect on our skin as a result of stress. They further introduced a beautician course that last for 6 months. The session concluded with a questionnaire session in which some students had the priviledge of receiving VLCC kits containing skin care products.
SALE OF JUTE BAGS
The department of zoology organized a jute bag sale which is one of our Golden Jubilee Project- Plastic Free Zone – Sale of Jute Bags at subsidized rates on the anti-Plastic day on 7th December 2016.The main motive of the sale is to spread awareness to reduce the use of plastics and use eco-friendly and reusable products. The sale was organized on the annual OSA Christmas sale.
PCOS, DIABETES AND THYROID AWARENESS PROGRAMME
The Department of Zoology conducted an awareness programme on the topic ‘PCOS, Diabetes & Thyroid’ on 16th November, 2016 for the I, II, III DC & PG students. A thyroid and PCOS testing camp was conducted in which 297 people took part including teachers, students and public.
It was a full day event in which 3 talks were conducted by Dr .P Girish, Consultant Endocrinologist, Renai Medicity, Mr Sreeni S, Certified Diabetes Educator and Mr Biju Nirmal Peter, MPT, CMP (NZ). They spoke about the symptoms and causes of PCOS, diabetes and thyroid and how the growing problems of lifestyle diseases affecting the present generation can be effectively eliminated by a systematic change in the current lifestyle practices.
WILDLIFE WEEK CELEBRATIONS – 2016
The Department of Zoology conducted the ‘Wildlife Week Celebrations-2016, from 7th to 11th November 2016. Various competitions were conducted for the students like Scientific Spell Bee, Quiz, Travelogue, Pictionary, Photography etc. Competitions were conducted on all 5 days from 2:15 pm to 3:30 pm at the Zoology Department.
On 7th November, the competitions conducted were PPT Presentation and Scientific Spell Bee. The topic for PPT Presentation was ‘Western Ghats’. Two other group events were also introduced like Aquarium setting and Scrap Book Setting. The department also instilled a trophy for the Best Class, sponsored by Smt.Gladys Francis Former HOD of the Department.
On 8th November, the competitions conducted were Poster Designing, Quiz, Scientific Drawing, Caption Writing and Travelogue. The topic for Poster Designing was ‘Man and Nature in Harmony’. The competitions conducted on 9th November were Power Point Preparation, Collage and Pencil Drawing. The topic for collage was ‘Habitat Destruction’ and the topic for pencil drawing was ‘Endangered Species of India’. The competitions conducted on 10th November were Best Word, Pictionary, Memory Game, Jumble in the Jungle and Photography. The topic for photography was ‘Faunal Diversity of Science Block, St. Teresa’s College.
On 11th November, the competitions conducted were Debate, Radio talk, Painting and Jute Bag Designing. The topic for Debate was ‘Hydroelectric Power: Boon or Bane’ and the topic for radio talk was ‘Disappearing Bees’ and for painting was ‘Butterfly Diversity of India’.
The highlight of the wildlife week competitions, was a seminar by Mr T V Sajeev, Scientist E-1, Department of Forest Entomology and Pathology, Kerala Forest Research Institute, Peechi on the topic ‘Science Vs Wildlife’.
OZONE DAY CELEBRATIONS-2016
The Department of Zoology observed ‘Ozone Day- 2016‘ on 22nd September 2016, in connection with the ‘International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer – 2016 Celebrations’, supported by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) on the focal theme ‘Ozone and Climate: Restored by a World United’. Intercollegiate competitions and seminars were conducted as a part of the celebrations. A total of 203 students (UG and PG) participated in the celebrations.
The welcome address was proposed by Dr. Reema Kuriakose, HOD and the function was inaugurated by handing over a sapling a PG student by Dr. A A Mohamed Hatha. to This was followed by a scientific talk by Dr. A A Mohamed Hatha on ‘Ozone Depletion: Impacts and Remedies’. He discussed on various topics related to ozone depletion and reclamation .
Painting and elocution competitions were also conducted as a part of the celebrations. The winners were awarded cash prizes during the valedictory function. Rev. Dr. Sr. Vinitha (CSST) , Director and Dr. Sajimol Augustine M, Principal, St.Teresa’s College, Ernakulam were the invited guests. The programme concluded by a vote of thanks proposed by Dr.Helvin Vincent, Convener of the programme.
KERALA RIVER OBSERVANCE DAY – 2016
The Department of Zoology in association with the Kerala River Protection Council, High Road, Aluva organized a seminar on ‘Kerala River Observance Day’ on 3rd October, 2016 at the Seminar Hall, St. Teresa’s College. The event was conducted in two sessions, forenoon and afternoon.
The forenoon session began at 10:30 am with a welcome speech by Sri. T V Rajan followed by the Presidential address by Prof. Sita Raman. The inauguration of the formal event was done by Prof. M K Prasad, Former Vice Chancellor, Calicut University. Following this, Mr. Babu Paul delivered a short message on River Day and a poem by Mr. P I Shankaranarayn. The felicitation of the event was done by Mr. Martin Loyal, Assistant Conservationist of Forests and Social Forestry. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Sri C P Nair.
The seminar session began at 11:30 am and it was conducted by the moderator, Dr. Shaju Thomas, Retd. Prof. Nirmala College. The topics covered during the seminar were ‘Vembannadu Backwaters & Climate Change’ by Dr. V Krupa (Scientist, CMFRI) and ‘Periyar Pollution’ by Dr. G D Martin, KUFOS. It consisted of remedies and solutions given by a select group of speakers regarding the conservations of various rivers of Kerala. The session started with a Presidential speech by Dr. S Ramachandran. The different rivers spoken about were Muvattupuzha River by Dr. Shaju Thomas, Periyar River by Sr. Venu Variyath, Manimalayar River by Sri V Gopinathpillai, and Chaliyar River by Sri. M P Abdullah, Bharathpuzha River by Sri K K Devdas and Pampa River by Sri P K Premdas. This session concluded with a short discussion followed by a vote of thanks by Prof. Gopalkrishnamurthy.
TALK ON CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN BIOTECHNOLOGY
Thee Zoology association organized a talk on ‘Career Opportunities in Biotechnology’ on 23rd August, 2016. The resource person for the day was Mr. Raju Venugopal, Director, Client Relationships, SciGenome. Participants for the programme included students from M.Sc. and IIIrd B.Sc Zoology & M.Sc. Botany. The topics highlighted during the sessions were various career opportunities in the field of Biotechnology like in academic research,teaching, clinical & diagnostic laboratories etc. A sneak peak into the facilities provided by the Sci Genome Lab was also shown.
WORKSHOP ON MANAGING CAREER CHOICES
The Zoology association conducted a workshop for the students of I and II DC zoology, on ‘Managing Career Choices‘ on 3rd August 2016. The invited speaker for the day was Dr. Anuradha Menon, Consultant psychiatrist, Leeds University, UK. The workshop was mainly aimed to give the students, an understanding of the qualities that will help in making decisions regarding their career choices and also on how to handle success and setbacks gracefully. The workshop mostly constituted interactive sessions, where the students shared their concerns and issues.
EYE TESTING CAMP
The Department Of Zoology conducted an eye camp on 3rd August 2016 in collaboration with the Vasan Eye Care Hospital, Koch. The camp was conducted in the science block and the students from all the departments were invited. A total of 346 students participated. The people who attended the camp were provided with free medical check up.
REV. SR. ROSALIND MEMORIAL INTER COLLEGIATE QUIZ ON “WILDLIFE AND ENVIRONMENT”
The Zoology Association, along with the Directorate of Field Publicity, Govt. of India & Rotary Club Cochin South organized an Intercollegiate Quiz competition on the topic ‘Wildlife and Environment’ for the UG and PG students on 27th July, 2016. Students from various colleges (15 colleges) participated in the Quiz. The competition was conducted in two rounds, a preliminary round which selected 6 finalists for the main round. The Quiz master for the competition was Mr Ajimon P.P, Assistant Audit Officer, Kerala State Audit Department .The Chief Guest for the day was P.N.Venugopal, Chief Sub Editor, Mathrubhumi Daily. The winners were awarded, Rev.Sr.Rosalind Memorial Ever Rolling Trophy and cash price.
ONE DAY SEMINAR ON ‘BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION AND ISSUES’
The Zoology Association organized a one day seminar on the topic ‘Biodiversity Conservation and Issues‘ on 29th June, 2016. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. E Kuhnikrishnan, by presenting a plant sapling. During the official function, Dr. Reema Kuriakose, HOD, welcomed the dignitaries and the students.
The first session of the seminar was conducted by Dr. Miriam Paul, Scientist, Marine Biodiversity Department, CMFRI, Kochi on the topic “Marine Biodiversity: Conservation & Issues”. She spoke about the marine biodiversity of India, its importance, threats faced and the need to protect our marine ecosystem. The session ended with a short group discussion followed by the vote of thanks.
The second session was conducted by Prof. E Kuhnikrishnan, Environmentalist and former Head, Dept.of Zoology, University College, Trivandrum, on the topic “Biodiversity of Western Ghats – Conservation Issues an Ecological Perspective”. He gave an insight into the proud history of the Western Ghats and the endemic species and the issues associated . The session concluded with an interactive session followed by a word of thanks for the speakers.
INAUGURATION OF THE ZOOLOGY ASSOCIATION
The formal inauguration of the Zoology Association was held on 23rd June, 2016. The formal function commenced with a prayer song followed by the welcome address by Ms. Greeta James of III DC and the presentation of the report by the Association Secretary. The chief guest for the day, Professor Gladys Francis, Retd. HOD, Dept. of Zoology, St. Teresa’s college inaugurated the association activities by presenting a token of life. She delivered the inaugural address by delivering an important message for the 1st years as well as the association. Dr. Reema Kuriakose, HOD, Dept. of Zoology delivered a speech welcoming the 1st years to the Dept. and advised them to be well-wishers for the dept. The function concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Abinamol P.A, 2nd year Representative.
This was followed by the, ‘Fresher’s day’ celebrations for the I DC students’ (2016 batch) in the afternoon. Ms. Athira Mathew of I DC Zoology was titled ‘Miss Fresher 2016′.
INTER COLLEGIATE ESSAY & POSTER DESIGNING COMPETITION
As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, the III DC and II DC students of the department of Zoology participated in an inter collegiate essay and poster designing competition organized by the Dept. of Biotechnology, at Al-Ameen college, Edathala on 15th June, 2016. The event was sponsored by KSCSTE, Trivandrum. The event was held as four different sessions which included a seminar on “Environmental Hazards in Kerala”, general activities like planting tree samples, awareness programs based on environmental issues and the inter collegiate competitions.
INTER COLLEGIATE ESSAY AND ELOCUTION COMPETITION
As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, the students of III DC & II M.Sc. Zoology participated in an inter collegiate essay and elocution competition held at Morning Star Home Science College, Angamaly on 14th June, 2016. The competition was organised by the Dept. of Physics & Zoology and sponsored by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology & Environment. The focal theme of the competition was “Join the race to make the world a better place”. The students also attended a seminar on “From Financial to Environmental Governance- joining the race” hosted by Dr. T.V. Sajeev, Scientist, KFRI.
INTER COLLEGIATE ESSAY COMPETITION
As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, the students from III DC Zoology participated in inter collegiate essay competition held at Sree Sankara College, Kalady on 14th June, 2016. The competition was organised by the Bhoomitra Sena Club of the college and sponsored by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology & Environment. The focal theme of the competition was “Join the race to make the world a better place”.
As part of the World Environment Day celebrations on behalf of the Bhoomitra Sena Club of the college, the IIIrd and IInd DC students of Zoology Department performed a flash mob on 9th June, 2016 within the campus, in order to motivate students to use eco-friendly bags and participate in the fight against plastics.
INTER COLLEGIATE ESSAY WRITING & PAINTING COMPETITION
As part of the World Environment Day celebrations, the students of III DC and II DC Zoology participated in inter-collegiate essay writing and painting competition on the topic “Join the race to make the world a better place”. The competition was held at St. Xavier’s College, Aluva on 8th June, 2016.
SEMINAR ON “LINKING RIVERS, BARRAGES AND FISH MIGRATION”
The students of II DC Zoology attended a seminar on “Linking Rivers, Barrages and Fish Migration” on 21st May, 2016. It was organized by the Community Environmental Resource Centre (CERC) of Ashoka Trust for Research along with Kerala University of Fisheries & Ocean Studies (KUFOS).
ACTIVITIES OF 2016-17
The Zoology Association activities began with the election of the office bearers on 7th June, 2016. Rhea Mohan Thoppil of III DC Zoology was elected as the Association Secretary. Ann Mary V.P of III DC Zoology was elected as the 3rd year Class Representative and Abinamol P.A of II DC Zoology was elected as the 2nd year Class Representative. Sreelakshmi Anand P.B of I DC Zoology was elected as the 1st year Class Representative and Jean Mary Joy of II MSc Zoology was elected as the II MSc Class Representative on 21st June, 2016. Dr. Meera Jan Abraham and Ms. Nimitha R Chandran were elected as the Staff Advisors for the academic year.

ASSOCIATION VALEDICTORY FUNCTION
Zoology Association 2015-16 Valedictory function was held on 1st March 2016. Rev.Sr. Francis Ann, Former Head of the Department of Zoology was the invited Chief Guest of the function. Ms. Aleeta P C (III DC Zoology), Secretary of the Zoology Association presented the report of the association activities of the year 2015-16.
FAREWELL TO FINAL YEARS
Farewell ceremony to III B.Sc Students was held on 1st March 2016. Cultural programmes were organized by IInd and Ist year students. Outgoing students shared their experiences in the college.
TALK ON POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME (PCOS)
The Zoology Association organized a talk on PCOS on 17th February 2016 by Dr. Lakshmi Rahul Lakshman, MBBS, MD, M.Tech, FINEM. Dr. Lakshmi spoke on the finest therapy tailored for the treatment of this lifestyle disease.
CLASS ON BIOTECHNOLOGY
Dr. Swapna P Antony, DST- Inspire faculty, National Centre for Aquatic Animal Health, Cochin University of Science and Technology took a class on Biotechnology and its aspects for III DC Zoology students on 17th February, 2016. The class included briefing on various fields and aspects of biotechnology and its significance. The class was inspirational for the students.
INTERDEPARTMENTAL TALK ON MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTION AND MEDICAL CODING
As a part of the Zoology Association activity an Interdepartmental talk was conducted on Medical Transcription and Medical Coding on 17th February, 2016. The sessions focused on opportunities for the graduate students to choose a career in association with medical field. The chief guest and speakers of the day was Dr.Sheeba Azeez and Dr.Vijaya from M Square Software and Services Pvt. Ltd.
INTERDEPARTMENTAL TALK ON THE APPLICATIONS OF NANAOTECHNOLOGY IN MOLECULAR MEDICINE
As a part of the Zoology Association activity an Inter departmental talk was conducted on ‘The Applications of Nanotechnology in Molecular Medicine’ on 27th January 2016. The chief Guest and speaker of the day was Dr. Ullas Moni, Assistant Professor, Head Stem Cell and Translational Lab, Head Advanced Immuno-hematology and Flow Cytometry Facility, Amrita Centre for Nanoscience and Molecular medicine, AIMS, Kochi-41.
KNOWLEDGE FAIR 2016 -RAPID IDENTIFICATION OF SPECIMENS
As a part of the “Knowledge Fair 2016”, the department of Zoology organized a competition ‘Rapid Identification of Specimens’ on 23rd January 2016. It was a competition aimed to understand how well the students are aware of the animals of the world. Students of the department of Zoology and other departments participated in the competition. A compilation of 50 animals were to be identified. The winner received a cash price of Rs.2500.
As a part of the 80th year celebration of the Department of Zoology, Sacred Heart College, an Intercollegiate Competition was conducted on 11th December 2015.Several of our students participated and acquired prizes in various events.
TALK ON SKIN AND HAIR – ‘GET THAT GLOW’
The Zoology Association organized an Interdepartmental scientific talk on ‘GET THAT GLOW’ powered by MET Therapeutics on 24th November 2015. Dr. Annu Jayan, was the speaker for the day. Mr. Sankar, Mr. Vipinjith and Mr. Rajeev Kumar, representatives of MET therapeutics were present. The programme concluded with a few final words to the students to drive home the message of ‘Feel good to look good”.
TEACHER ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME
The department of Zoology conducted, Hands on Training programme on ‘Techniques in Microbiology and Biotechnology ‘as a part of the Teacher Enrichment Programme on 11th November, 2015. The training was conducted by Merit Biolabs in the Department as a one day programme. Apart from the teachers of the department of Zoology, teachers and Research Scholars from Botany and Home Science participated. The training held as two sessions the first being a theory session where the importance and working of various instruments were explained followed by second session in which hands on training was provided.
AWARENESS PROGRAMME – WORLD SIGHT DAY 2015
In connection with the World Sight Day 2015, an awareness programme was organized by the Zoology Association and SSM Eye Research Foundation, in association with Giridhar Eye Hospital, Kadavanthra, on 7th October 2015.Dr. Vinay Sukumara Pillai of Giridhar Eye Hospital gave a talk on the importance of Eye health.
INTERNATIONAL TALK ‘ECOSYSTEM MODELLING AND MODELLING FISH DISTRIBUTION’
The Zoology Association conducted a Seminar on ‘Ecosystem Modeling and Modeling Fish Distribution’on 10th September, 2015 by Dr.Kenneth Rose, Associate Professor and Dean for Research, School of Coast and Environment, Department of Oceanography and Coastal Science, Louisiana State University.
SEMINAR ON ‘BIOLOGY AND SOCIETY’
The Zoology Association conducted a one day seminar on ‘Biology and Society’ on 9th September,2015. The programme commenced with the inauguration of the seminar by the Director of St.Teresa’s College, Rev.Dr.Sr.Vineetha and the Principal Dr. Sajimol Augustine. The guest speakers were Dr.Shaju Thomas, Senior Writer Fellow, Kerala State Council For Science, Technology and Environment and gave a talk on “New Biology- What and Why?”. This was followed by a talk on the topic ‘Why Should I Study Biology? A Fishery Scientist Perspective.’ by Dr.Sunil Mohammed, Principal Scientist and Head, Molluscan Fisheries Division, CMFRI .The next session was by Dr.Kaladharan, Principal Scientist, FEMD, CMFRI on the topic ‘Biology as a Hobby’. The final speech was by Dr.Vijayagopal, Principal Scientist and Head, Marine biotechnology Division, CMFRI on the topic ‘Fish and Health’. The programme concluded with an interactive session followed by Vote of Thanks proposed by Dr.Soja Louis.
The Zoology Association Celebrated Onam on 19th September 2015. All the students and teachers of the department celebrated the festival in its traditional attire. There were various competitions including Onapattu, Kaikottikalli, Coconut Scrapping, Malayali Manga, in which the students participated enthusiastically. Various prizes were awarded at the end of the programme.

INAUGURATION OF PG COURSE
The Department of Zoology started Post Graduate course in Zoology with Molecular Biology as the special paper. The Course was inaugurated on 21st July 2015 by Rev. Sr. Francis Ann, Former HOD of the department and Former Provincial, by lighting the Lamp. Rev. Dr. Sr. Vineetha, Director of the College inaugurated the PG section of the department. Rev. Fr. Augustine Laiju blessed the new PG section. Smt. Gladys Francis, HOD of the department welcomed the gathering and Dr. Sajimol Augustine, Principal and Smt. Nalini Prasad, Former HOD felicitated during the inaugural session.
TALK ON MARINE POLLUTION AND INVASIVE ALIEN SPECIES
The Zoology Association, 2015-16 organized a talk on Marine Pollution and Invasive Alien Species by Dr. Nandini N. Menon, Senior Scientist, Nansen Environmental Research Centre India (NERCI) for the Ist, IInd , IIIrd B.Sc. Zoology students on 7th July 2015. Mr. Mathew introduced on the activities of the Partnership for the Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO), Research Alumni to the students.
THE INAUGURATION OF THE ZOOLOGY ASSOCIATION-2015
The Activities of Zoology association was inaugurated on 1st July 2015 by Dr. Nandini N. Menon, Senior Scientist, Nansen Environmental Research Centre India (NERCI). On the occasion Dr. Nandini addressed the students of the department on the Need for Basic Science Graduates in Frontiers of Research. Fresher’s day was conducted for the I DC students’ 2015 batch in the afternoon.
ACTIVITIES OF 2015-16
The activities of the Department of Zoology for the year 2015-16 commenced with the election of office bearers on 29th June, 2015. Aleeta P C of III DC Zoology was elected as the Association Secretary. Mary Juliet Zephy Gonzalves of III DC zoology was elected as the 3rd year Class Representative and Ann Mary V B of II DC Zoology were elected as the 2nd year Representative. Shabnam Farisha of I DC Zoology was elected as the 1st year Class Representative on 30th June, 2015. Dr. Soja Louis was nominated as the Staff Advisor for the academic year.

CLASS ON GENETIC ENGINEERING
A class on Genetic Engineering was taken for the III DC Zoology students on 19th February 2015 by Dr.Swapna.P.Antony, DST-Inspire faculty, CUSAT. Classes were taken on topics like Gene cloning, Blotting Techniques, PCR, DNA fingerprinting, Gel electrophoresis and Hybridization. The class was very informative, where students got to know about various techniques and tools used in genetic engineering. The students were also taken to the Cochin University for hands on training session.
CAREER GUIDANCE CLASS
A career guidance class was conducted for the III DC students on 5th January 2015 and for the II DC Zoology students on 11th February 2015 by Mr.Ravi Kiran, faculty Research World about the various National level examinations and tips to crack these exams and also about the different careers in Zoology.
UGC SPONSORED NATIONAL SEMINAR
A two day UGC sponsored National Seminar on ‘Trends In Biodiversity Studies’ was organised by the Department on the 4th and 5th of December.The Seminar was inaugurated by the renowned environmentalist, Dr. Madhav Gadgil, Founder and former Director of CES, IISC, Bangalore. The seminar was a great success with the participation of students and teachers from various colleges in Kerala. There were 18 paper presentations on biodiversity.
HEALTH CARE CLASS
The students of I DC Zoology attended a class conducted by Vasan Dental Care on November 7th, 2014. The class was held at Panampalli Nagar and dealt with the different equipments used in Dentistry and on how to care for teeth. A Quiz was also conducted for the students as a part of it.
A Zonal Zoofest was conducted by the Zoological Society of Kerala at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam on 23rd September 2014 in which the students of our department bagged a number of prizes. The department of Zoology, St.Teresa’s College were the overall champions and walked away with the trophy.
As a part of the Shastradarshan program, the students of III DC Zoology visited Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII), Kottayam, on 18th September 2014. It helped the students to get familiarize with the latest technologies in the field of research.
As part of the Navathy celebration a science exhibition was conducted for two days, 13th and 14th August 2014 respectively. The Museum and labs of the Department of Zoology was thrown open to 10 schools.
EYE CAMP – 2014
The Department Of Zoology conducted an eye camp on 10th August 2014 in collaboration with the Medical Trust Hospital, Ernakulam and Cochin South Rotary Club. The camp was conducted at Thiruvankulam Municipal zonal office. Mr. R.Venugopal, Chairman, Thripunithura Municipality, inaugurated the camp. Mr.K.V.Saju, Thripunithura Municipal Councillor presided over the function. Dr.Sr.Vinitha, Principal, St.Teresa’s college delivered the inaugural address. Around 200 people attended the camp and they were informed about the camp through news papers, radio announcements and survey conducted by the II and III year students of the Zoology Department. The people who attended the camp were provided with free medical check up and medicine. The Medical Trust Hospital conducted cataract surgeries at a reduced rate for 10 deserving patients who attended the camp. Students donated an amount of Rs. 4000/- for the same.
INTER COLLEGIATE QUIZ ON ‘WILDLIFE AND ENVIRONMENT’-2014
An inter collegiate quiz competition on Wildlife and Environment was organised in association with Green Leaf Wildlife magazine, Directorate of field publicity, Government of India and Cochin South Rotary Club on 6th August 2014. Dr. Raman Nair, Director of SCMS College, Kalamaserry was the chief guest. Smt. K.A.Beena, Assistant Director of Directorate field Publicity, Government of India, Mr.Arun Sreedhar and Mr. George, Director Board members of Rotary Club were the other dignitaries present. Students from many colleges came for the competition and six teams qualified the preliminary round. Mr. P.P.Ajimon, IMG faculty, Kakkanad was the quiz master. Thajudeen and Sujin of Sree Sankara College bagged the 1st prize. Deepa Noble and Subhalakshmi of Sacred Heart College, Ravisankar and Joseph Thomas of SB College won the 2nd and 3rd prize respectively.
PLASTIC FREE ZONE : JUTE BAG SALE 2014
As a part of our Navathi Celebrations our department organized a jute bag sale which is one of our Golden Jubilee Project- Plastic Free Zone – Sale of Jute Bags at subsidized rates on the anti-Plastic day on 3rd July 2014.The main motive of the sale is to spread awareness to reduce the use of plastics and use eco-friendly and reusable products. The sale was organized both in the Arts and Science block and the first sale was made to Dr.Sr. Vinitha, Principal, St.Teresa’s College.

ACTIVITIES OF 2016-17
The Zoology Association activities began with the election of the office bearers on 14th June, 2014. Sanyo Jean Rozario of III DC Zoology was elected as the Association Secretary. Merin Verghese of III DC Zoology was elected as the 3rd year Class Representative and Mellisa Treasa of II DC Zoology was elected as the 2nd year Class Representative. Greeta James of I DC Zoology was elected as the 1st year Class Representative on 5th August, 2014. Dr. Reema Kuriakose was nomoinated as the Staff Advisors for the academic year.

INTER COLLEGIATE QUIZ ON ‘WILDLIFE AND ENVIRONMENT’-2013
The Zoology Association 2013-14 along with Directorate of Field Publicity, Govt. of India and Rotary Club, Cochin South organized an Inter Collegiate Quiz Competition on WILD LIFE AND ENVIRONMENT for the Under Graduate students on 14th August 2013. Participants from 14 different colleges competed for the Nature Quiz.
INTER-DEPARTMENTAL SEMINAR ORGANIZED ON PREPARATIONS FOR ARS EXAMINATION
The zoology association, 2013-14 organized an interdepartmental seminar on preparations for ARS examination by Dr. Prajith K. K. Scientist, Central Institute Of Fisheries Technology (ICAR) on 13th August 2013 for the Ist, IInd , IIIrd b.sc. Zoology and IIIrd B.Sc. Botany students.
PROTECT YOUR MOM CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED
Protect Your Mom Campaign is a noble initiative by Premi Mathew an Ex – Teresian, was launched on Wednesday 19th of June, 2013. The event was organized by the Dept. of Zoology. The event witnessed an alumni, Nisha Jose Mani donating her lustrous hair to make natural wigs for cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy. The audience gathered in the Gym Plaza was truly inspired by this compassionate act. The PYM campaign was not only about getting hair donors, but also about early screening for cancer and creating awareness on early detection.

The Zoology Association Activities 2013-14 was inaugurated in the forenoon of 17th July 2013 by Prof. Dr. Reethamma (Retd.), Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam. NATIONAL SCIENCE DAY CELEBRATION 2013
The Zoology Association 2012-13 organised an awareness program on ‘Cancer’ as part of the National Science Day Celebration 2013 on 28th February 2013 at Gym Plaza, Science Block. A very informative and thought-provoking session was led by none other than Dr. V.P.Gangadharan, the pioneer Medical Oncologist in Kerala. The participants were very delighted to interact with the speaker thereafter.
MIND POWER AND MEDITATION
The Zoology Association 2012-13 organised a one day progam on ‘Mind Power and Meditation’ by Ms. Sarita J.H., certified trainer, Life Line Foundation Cochin on 15th February 2013. She motivated the students to re-engineer their thought process, to rediscover their hidden potentials, and to optimise the power of their mind. The day long program was well appreciated by all the participants.

Under Graduate Zoology students from 11 different colleges participated in the Inter Collegiate Quiz Competition on the topic ” Biodiversity, Wildlife and Environment” on 29th January 2013 organised by the Zoology Association 2012-13. Miss Deepa Noble and Miss Lakshmi Sarojam of Sacred Heart College, Thevara bagged the first prize. Students from Maharajas College and St.Teresa’s College won the second and third prizes respectively.Cash prizes and certificates were distributed to the winners. Prof. Joseph Mathew, Retd. Zoofest 2012- (Zonal Level Competitions) was held on 14th February 2012 at the Department of Zoology, St.Teresa’s College, Ernakulam. Students from 8 different colleges participated. Separate competitions were held for First, Second and Third year students. Our students bagged maximum number of prizes in the events like Bibliography, Poster Designing, Spelling, Best word, Radio Talk, Dissection, Scientific Drawing and Group Song.

A TRAINING ON FIRST AID AND BASIC LIFE SUPPORT TECHNIQUES
A training program on “First Aid and Basic Life Support Techniques” was jointly organised by the Department of Zoology and Medical Trust Hospital Ernakulam on 24th August 2011. Dr. Raymond and Dr. Maria of MTH trained the students how to act while in a scene of accident. The students were given hands on training in CPR.
TALK ON MOTIVATION
A talk on Motivation was conducted on 19th August 2011. The session was led by Mr. Sudheer Babu who inspired the students to aim high and emphasized the importance of planning the day to day activities in achieving the goal.
