The Department of Psychology, St. Teresa’s College (Autonomous), Ernakulam, organized a workshop on SPSS in research for the UG and PG final-year students of the department from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM. The session started with a welcome speech by Ayesha Sameer, a B.Sc. Psychology final year student. The resource person for the session was Dr. Jinomol P, Associate Professor at Saintgits Institute of Management. She holds a Ph.D. in the area of Finance and has 11 years of teaching experience. Dr. Jinomol has also presented and published several papers in finance.

This workshop aimed to help students with the research analysis for their dissertation projects. The session began with an introduction to basic research concepts, such as variables, their types, sampling techniques, and parametric and non-parametric tests. Once the theoretical aspects were covered, students were given practical training on how to import data from an Excel sheet to SPSS, along with basic aspects of SPSS, variable view, labeling, and value assignment. They were then taught how to run different tests, such as t-tests, correlations, ANOVA, and regression in SPSS. They learned how to obtain and analyze the results from these tests.

The participants were attentive throughout the session and interacted well. All their doubts were addressed and cleared. The vote of thanks was proposed by Ms. Reeba Manu, an M.Sc. Psychology final year student.

Outcome of the activity: The workshop helped the students gain an understanding of the basics of research, including which tests to use. They also received hands-on training in conducting various parametric and non-parametric tests, such as Spearman correlation, Pearson correlation, t-tests, Mann-Whitney U Test, and simple regression. Additionally, they learned how to analyze data based on the results obtained.
