The department of Home Science and B.Voc food Processing Technology at St. Teresa’s College Ernakulam jointly organized one day seminar on food adulteration- concerns and challenges on January 23, 2018. It was conducted in the college campus in association with AFST (I) kochi chapter, NSI kochi chapter and FQL & RC kochi. District collector Shri. K. Mohammed Y Safirulla inaugurated the function and enlightened about the concerns about the food adulteration and right to life. He spoke about the issues of adulteration in all the stages of food production.
The keynote address was delivered by Shri. K.V. Shibu (Assistant Commissioner of food safety) on food safety and the health problems which may occur due to the influence of adulterants. He also focused in his talk about the relative threats by the diseases.
The first session was handled by Shri. Cherian K Kuriakose, President, Districtconsumer disputes redressal forum on importance of consumer protection and food safety act.
The second session was on additives and adulterants in food and was conducted by Prof. Dr. D. D. Nambudiri, Adjunct Porfessor, Dept of food science and technology, KUFOS and President of AFST (I) Kochi chapter. He discussed about various additives and adulterants in common foods and the tests to detect them.
A demonstration on methods to detect adulterants in common food items by FQL & RC, Marine Drive, Kochi. It was preceded by panel discussion. A seminar about nutrition and wellness program also conducted at this collage to provide awareness about nutrition rich products.
Dr. Anu Joseph, Associate Professor, Dept of Home Science and Ms. Bhavya E P, HOD, B. Voc Food Processing Technology, convenors of the seminar spoke on the occasion. Everyone got new information about the issues of food adulteration. Due to food adulteration people are trying to produce food crops at their land area. Through this everyone get fresh food products. The seminar on food adulteration was successfully completed and it was a good experience.
