Day 1

A Two day MTTS programme MTTS Overture was organized by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics on 29th and 30th of September 2023 at Arts Auditorium. The resource persons were Prof. S. Kumaresan, Director, MTTS Trust and Dr. Dhanya Rajendran, Assistant Professor,IISER, Thiruvanathapuram . Mathematics Training and Talent Search Programme (MTTS) funded by the National Board for Higher Mathematics, an apex body of the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India is organized under the dynamic leadership of Prof. S. Kumaresan. Students from the department as well as students from other institutions participated in the programme. The inauguration ceremony began with a prayer. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Ursala Paul, HOD, Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The presidential address was given by Rev. Sr. Dr. Vinitha CSST, Manager. Dr. Alphonsa Vijaya Joseph, Principal felicitated the gathering. Dr. Susan Mathew Panakkal delivered the vote of thanks.  The session was initiated by Prof. S. Kumaresan on the topic linear algebra. He motivated us to think beyond the mechanical way of thinking. He also spoke about logic and emphasized the importance of each quantifier in theorems. Dr. Dhanya Rajendran taught us the topic sequences. She encouraged us to intuitively think about each problem . Prof. Kumaresan emphasized on subtle but integral parts of each proof which made mathematics fun. They made us realize the joys of mathematics which can be only found out by our own thinking. Refreshments were provided.

Day 2

The session of the second day started with familiarizing the simple problems in obtaining a solution set of a set of equations and  Prof. S. Kumaresan Sir made the students feel the joy and simplicity of solving. He was also able to then develop higher concepts and bring 2D geometry into it. Dr. Dhanya Rajendran made students realize that real analysis wasn’t about rushing through complicated proofs; instead, she introduced students to the beauty of mathematics through captivating examples. What stood out to students was the emphasis on individual mathematical thinking. It wasn’t about memorizing formulas and procedures but about actively engaging with the concepts. This approach not only made learning more enjoyable but also allowed the students to truly grasp the intricacies of mathematics. Overall, the workshop was a transformative journey that has left all its participants with a newfound appreciation for the subject and a desire for continued exploration.

What truly set this workshop apart was its commitment to nurturing individual mathematical thinking. The focus was not on passive learning or rote memorization, but on encouraging students to actively engage with mathematical concepts. This approach not only made the subject more engaging but also empowered everyone who attended it to approach math with confidence and creativity.
