Panel Discussion on National Science Day: Exploring the Science of Psychology

In association with Mind World, Department of Psychology, St. Teresa’s College (Autonomous), Ernakulam organized an online Panel Discussion on National Science Day: Exploring the Science of Psychology on February 28th, 2023. The panel comprised eminent members from different fields of Psychology.

  • Dr. Preetha Menon, Asst. Professor (Sl Gr), Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus
  • Ms. Bindu John, Head, Dept of Psychology, St. Teresa’s College

Ms. Bindu John moderated the discussion and introduced the topic of discussion emphasizing the aspects of empirical research in the field of Psychology and how Psychology is different from other pseudosciences.

Mr. Jimshil K, Clinical Psychologist from Mind World spoke about clinical aspects that the field of psychology deals with and certain stereotypes and misconceptions that are being held against psychologists.

Dr. Sreenivasan Jayaraman, Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist, Apollo Hospital, Chennai gave an insight into the functional aspect of using neuropsychological tests and how they are being conducted on someone who undergoes brain surgery. Dr. Sreenivasan Jayaraman spoke about the field of Neuropsychology and how the disciplines of medicine contribute to the field of Psychology in assessment and treatment procedures.

Forensic and Criminal Psychologist, Dr. Rejani T. G, Head of the Department of Clinical Psychology, MGMCH, Jaipur discussed the development and application of scientific knowledge and methods to help answer legal questions arising in criminal, civil, contractual, or other judicial proceedings in the area of forensic and criminal psychology.

Dr. Preetha Menon discussed aspects of Health Psychology focusing on how biological, social, and psychological factors influence health and illness. She discussed how patients handle illness, why some people don’t follow medical advice, and the most effective ways to control pain or change poor health habits.

Ms. Bindu John summed up the points discussed and the major takeaways from the interactions and discussion. Ms. Magna Christopher from Mind World extended the vote of thanks to the Panel Members, participants, and students from various institutions.

Around 150 participants including students from other institutions, faculty members, social workers, and psychologists attended the webinar.
