Historical Visit to Chendamangalam

The historical visit to Chendamangalam which is conducted by the Department of History was an unforgettable experience for students. Chendamangalam is a small town in Paravur Taluk, Ernakulam. It is famous for its handloom village. Moreover, it regained its popularity after a huge flood which hit in Kerala in 2018. The first and second-year Postgraduate students visited the historically important places at Chendamangalam on 14-01-2020.

We visited the historical places in Chendamangalam. The historical places are Pallippuram fort, Chendamangalam Synagogue, and Paliyam Palace. The Pallipuram Fort is a hexagonal building. It is the oldest Europian building in India. Today, the fort is a protected monument of the Kerala State Archeological Department.

The Chendamangalam Synagogue is the traditional Jewish workship place of Jews. This synagogue has 175  years old. At the same time, Chendamangalam synagogue reflects traditional Kerala Architecture that blends with western architecture.

We visited Paliyam Palace which is the traditional home for Paliyath Achans-Prime Ministers of Kochi. Moreover, this is the historical place that gives you an idea about how people in the 19th century lived. Now, the paliyam palace is part of the Muziris project. It is a highly functional building at that time.

So, the visit to the historical places at Chendamangalam gives students an idea about the Architectural and Cultural history of the place.
