Student enhancement capability scheme (SCES) is a innovative concept conceived by the Department of Economics,to Motivate,Realise, and Encourage the latent talents of the students.

The first session of SCES for the academic year 2017-18 was conducted on 6th July. It was organized by the 3rd yearsof the department.Dr.Thushara George (HOD of the department) had given necessary advice to the students, as it was the first SCES for the first year students. The 3rd years had shown a video on Economicsshowing the different types of elasticities in perfect competition and had also conducted a quiz on Economics and current affairs.
The video, which wasshown by them were really inspiring and had shown the importance and value of Economics in the current world scenario. The Quiz was informative and had boosted the knowledge of students about current affairs. It was a tough competition between the four years, and the second years had proven their intelligence by winning the quiz.

TheSCES conducted on 3rd August was a talk by Heeba, who was a former student of the department, who is currently pursuing her Masters degree in Politics at JNU. During the session She shared her experience of her appearing for the civil service examinations and its coaching. She gaveseveral tips to civil service aspirants and the factors that they should consider before appearing for the same. She also told how she got into the JNU and the way she cracked the entrance. She also shared with us the reason why she opted for a M.A in Politics. She suggested us some names of Reference books that they should refer at least once before appearing for any competitive exams .Her talk was an eye opener to all the civil service aspirants. Her talk was very effectiveas several studentswere able to clear all their doubts regarding NET and UPSC examinations.
SCES Report- 8th February 2018
The SCES session on 8th February was conducted by Ms.Bhavana, alumni of St.Teresa’s. She has worked in a corporate company in Dubai and is currently doing research. The class focussed on various career options for the students- careers in corporate companies, education field, law and journalism were discussed. Ms.Bhavana also spoke about her experience in the Corporate sector, the importance of work-life balance and how to make the most of our time in college. She stressed the importance of having a good relationship with our teachers and participating in extra-curricular activities. She also spoke on how SCES sessions had helped her fellow classmates and urged us not to skip them. The importance of work-life balance while working was discussed. Ms.Bhavana discussed the health problems she had because she did not take her health seriously while working in Corporate and urged us to make a healthy lifestyle a top priority. She also answered doubts students put forward at the end of the session.
SCES REPORTS (2016-17)
On july 7 2016 , the SCES commenced with a brief introduction about ‘STARTUP VILLAGE’- its opportunities and functions presented by Aleesha Agnes of 2nd DC Economics. After the presentation, the guest of the day, Smt.Nandini , a startup entrepreneur , dealing with online homemade food services talked about her business venture, its prospesctives,opportunities and management. She also focused on key areas of entrepreneurial development , skills and scope of developing online portals in modern scenario. The session winded up by 3:45.
The SCES on july 21 ,2016 was conducted in two sessions. The first session dealt with power point presentation of “Kerala Union Budget ,2016-17” done by Tara Mohandas ,of IstD.C. Economics. Various Key areas of budget included agriculture,investment,infrastructure,industrial development,education sector etc. The presentation mainly focused on the amount of investment done on each categories.
The second session dealt with a debate on “Fat Tax – pros and cons. Students enthusiastically participated and gave opinions about the ’14.5%’ hike in fat tax.
The SCES winded up at 3:30pm.
On August 5 2016 , as part of SCES activity a quiz on current economic affairs was conducted by Aishwarya of I DC Economics.
On Aug 11 2016 , the sces session commenced with a news paper roundup by Smruthy K S of II DC Economics , focusing on economic and business affairs. Later, a discussion about the ‘BREXIT’ was held.
On Aug 18 2016, a quiz on current affairs was conducted by maria shilling of 2nd DC economics.
The SCES activity done on sep 8 2016 was a group discussion on “ should women be regulated on what they wear?”. Students enthusiastically participated and gave out their views as well as the general perspective about dress code. The discussion ended on a positive note on being well dressed and upholding modesty in all sense. Soon after the discussion , a quiz on current economic affairs was conducted.the session ended by 3:30 pm.
On October 6 2016 , the SCES activity done was a newspaper roundup and quiz conducted by Ritu Elizabeth Abraham and Monica Sebastian of IInd D C Economics. The quiz focused on current affairs, economics and business . Students actively participated in the quiz .
On october 14 2016, CPPR conducted a book discussion on the famous book “ The law” by Frederick Bastiat and “Foundations of Free society” by Institute of Economic Affairs,London.
On November 11 , a debate on demonetisation – its effect on economy was conducted as part of sces activity. Students were divided into for and against teams for the same. The debate also threw light on vital issues like cashless economy,its pros and cons,black money, hawala transactions , financial inclusion etc. the session ended at 3:30 pm
The SCES activity on nov 18 was a power point presentation done by zerita of III BA Economics on “ monetary policies taken by urjit patel”. The presentation focused on various monetary issues, policies taken , future economic growth , tools adopted by RBI and bank rates
On December 2 ,the members of center for public policy research (CPPR) conducted a group discussion on public policies taken by government. The session was very interactive and interesting.It gave rise to many thought evoking issues and made us understand the role of government in our daily life.
On dec 9, Tisha of I BA Economics conducted a quiz on current affairs with special reference to business and economics.
SCES ACTIVITY-2015-16

The first session of SCES for the academic year 2015-16 was held on the 7th of August, 2015. It created a platform for two vibrant debates on the topics ‘Subsidies versus DBT’ and ‘Public investment in railways’.
The first debate saw a divide between participants who supported subsidies and those who vouched for the effectiveness of DBT. Key points by supporters included accessibility to essential goods for poor households, absence of mis-appropriation of benefits by male members of the family and overall economic feasibilty. Contradicting these statements were points like absence of middle men in the DBT system, prevention of price distortions and undervaluing or over-exploitation of scarce resources.
The second debate impelled the students to compare and contrast the two forms of investment that can drive the Indian Railways. Supporters of public investment recognised the need for providing a basic service like transportation to the common masses and pointed out the significant role that the government aided railway industry had played in India’s development. In opposition to their views, were opinions of degrading quality in infrastructure, management and healthcare services and lack of prompt delivery of the service to the common man.

Climate change, sustainable development and India’s Green Actions
The SCES session held on the 4th of September 2015 was conducted by RinithaTharian and Aleesha Agnes of I D.C Economics. The session focused on environment friendly development.
Rinitha handled the topic ‘Climate change and sustainable development’. She briefed on the history of climate change deliberations, the nature of current climate change policies and the impact of reckless development. Aleesha shed light on the energy consumption scenario in India and the implications of a shift in policy from that of carbon subsidy to carbon tax.
Overall the session proved that economic development is always buttressed by wholesome environmental policies.

Make in India – What to Make In India, Services or Manufacturing?
The SCES session held on the 11th of September 2015 was dealt by Linda Daniel of I D.C Economics. Linda delved into the recent paradigm of thought regarding the scheme of ‘Make In India’. The session sought to understand the scheme of Make in India and further analyse its effects in the secondary and tertiary sectors.
With the help of detailed graphs and statistics, Linda proved the growth triggering nature of the Services sector over that of the Manufacturing sector. It was understood that the Services sector would harbor development if the efforts under Make In India arechannelized towards it.
Through this critical analysis, the audience gained familiarity with the concept of Make in India, and understood the benefits the scheme would potentially bring about in the sectors of the economy.

On 19th July 2013, inauguration of the activities of economics association took place with the presence of SCES coordinator Dr.Thushara George, economics association secretary Silpa Joseph, joint secretary Sreelakshmi R.
With a brief introduction of activities of economics association was given to new I DC students .
Economics association was inaugurated by P Devika of III DC economics by clicking on the inauguration PPT .

AUGUST 2013
On 2nd august 2013 Election for new secretary and joint secretary was conducted with the presence of SCES coordinator Dr. Thushara George , Silpa joseph secretary , Sreelakshmi r joint secretary
About 5 students contested for the post of secretary and joint secretary post respectively
Toolika suresh ,ocea from I dc economics , Elizabeth susan koshy ,priyanka menon from II dc and P devika from III dc contested for the election
The election started by students contesting for the election gave a brief introduction of themselves
P devika of III DC became the new secretary and Priyanka menon of II DC became the new joint secretary .
On 16 th august the new SCES activities started by giving a brief introduction to students ,what was the objectives of SCES ,and how students can enhance their capabilities by organizing and participating in various programmes undertaken by the department .

On 6th September activities of Sces started by dividing students into different groups according to the choice of students .

1.BANKING GROUP –Students who are interested to join the banking sector can join the banking group
2.IAS –students who aspire to become an IAS officer can join the group
3.TEACHING- Students who is interested to join teaching profession can join the teaching group
4.MBA- Students who wish to be entrepreneur or join the business sector can join the group
5.PSC –Students who wish to get employment through PSC can join the group
By dividing students into different groups according to their choice can help to develop their potential further by specialization and at the same time enhancing the capabilities in different career /profession they wish to join in future. Students can have group discussions on various respective topics related to the career they choose.

In the competition three pillars three word related to economics will be given to students from each class ,students should relate the three words and speak to the audience

JANUARY 2013
On 31st January ,2014 a sces session on ‘Kerala budget ’ was organized. A power point presentation of ‘Kerala budget ’ was presented by III dc economics students.PPT was presented with the esteemed presence of Dr. Thushara George ,SCES coordinator.
PPT presentation started with an introduction of a slide ‘WHAT IS BUDGET’. The slide was presented by Syamily k .The meaning of the word Budget is derived from a old French word bougette which means a purse.
The second slide on different types was presented by Maria Mathew. The different types of budget are Balanced budget, Surplus budget and Deficit budget.
The third slide on Different components of budget was presented by Merlin p.s.
The slide on Kerala budget was presented by P Devika. Budget at a glance makes us realize what type of budget is Kerala budget. The Kerala budget 2014-15 is actually a deficit budget, expenditure is greater than the revenue collected. Revenue deficit of Kerala budget is Rs 7131.69 cr. Then different highlights of budget were presented. Then a slide on Agriculture was presented. One of the most important feature of Kerala budget is that tremendous importance has been given to the agricultural sector .
The slide on Industrial sector was presented by Mary leanda Fernandez. Small scale industries, traditional industries has been given importance in this budget
The slide on Service sector was presented by Shyamily K C.E-governance programme was the main highlight.
The slide on Tax proposals was presented by Steffy Johnny. Higher taxes and lower taxes has been imposed on commodities.
The slide on criticisms on Kerala budget was presented .One of the most important criticisms is that the budget is actually a REVENUE DEFICIT budget. Tax proposals are not so welcoming. The government hasn’t given much importance in reducing the inflation in the state.

The SCES activity for the first week of August was held on 3rd August ,2012 in room no:12,by the economics wing of St.Teresa’s College.A group discussion was organized which was presided by Bhavana Sarah John of third degree economics.She started by briefly explaining the rules and regulations of the group discussionThe topic for the group discussion was the “Ownership of Jammu and Kashmir”.Three student representatives were chosen from every year.The members of the discussion were Uthara .G, Fathima Tuba, Gayathri.S, Maria Mathew, Sreelakshmi R, Shreshta, Annie Theresa, Vachana R,and Oshia.The discussion was initiated by Gayatri .S with the history of Jammu and Kashmir.All the participants brought out relevant and valuable points.The topic was well discussed and was concluded by Maria Mathew of second degree.The discussion came to an end by adjudging Gayathri S of first degree as the Best speaker.The SCES was well organized and it proved to be a great platform where in the students are given an opportunity to mould and sharpen their leadership,speaking and organizing skills and capacities.

Student enhancement capability scheme (SCES) is a innovative concept conceived by the Department Of Economics,to Motivate,Realise, and Encourage the latent talents of the students. SCES was formally Inaugurated(along with the association inauguration) with an induction of the first years into the programme .
SCES sessions are regularly held on the second hour of Fridays.
The first Session was handled by the third years, who conducted an ‘Economics Quiz’ which saw the second years emerge winners,
In the second session of SCES A quiz and extempore on self introduction was conducted to ease the stage fright of the students, this session also witnessed students getting expert advices and tips on how to improve their presentation skill and over come stage fear.
Successive sessions of SCES witnessed more student participation and the introduction of Standard Competition Events.
Every Session of SCES starts with quiz, followed suit by various other events like public speaking,Table Topics, and mock press. SCES Quiz sessions so far has covered the following disciplines:
