The Teresian family bids final goodbye to the “Iron lady’ of Kerala Politics- K. R. Gouri Amma, alumnae of St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam, who passed away at the age of 102 due to age-related ailments. She belonged to the 1938-1941 batch of B.A. Economics.
The grand-old lady of the Indian politics held to her name the honour of being the longest serving woman legislator in Kerala Assembly, the oldest woman member in the Assembly, the senior-most woman Minister and the one with the highest number of victories in elections.
The Land Reforms in Kerala is one the greatest achievements of Gowri Amma, who, as the Revenue Minister, presented the Land Reforms Bill to the then government to curb the limitation of land owned by single individual. The final Act came into force on January 1, 1970. Gouri Amma had also drafted and piloted the historic Kerala Agrarian Relations Bill, leaving far-reaching impact on the state’s socio-economic and political spheres. According to Teresians, she epitomised women empowerment at a time when women were generally reluctant to enter social avenues, not to mention hardcore political activism.
Along with the rest of Kerala, each Teresian pays their respectful homage to the firebrand Communist leader, gifted administrator and a great humanist who fought for social transformation.
