Project ‘Kalicheppu’- Handing over ceremony- 4th March 2021

The second year B.Sc. Apparel and Fashion Design students of Department of Fashion Designing, St Teresa’s College, as a part of their Design Thinking Project in fourth semester are required to develop a solution for a problem in the society and develop a prototype employing the design thinking process.

This year, as an experience study prior to the Design Thinking Project, one of the problems identified was the flooding of plastic toys in the market. As a solution for this, the idea of making educational toys using reusable materials was put forth and project ‘Kalicheppu’ was initiated. The students used the waste materials which can be reused, designed and developed many creative educational toys like puzzles, alphabets, shapes and numbers, colours and even some sport activity products.

During the brainstorming sessions, students were able to gain knowledge in recycling, reusing and developing skills in handicrafts. They were also able to learn about child preferences and how to make the toys visually attractive, keeping in mind their safety as well.

On 4th March 2021, the educational toys made by the students were handed over to Ms. Khadeejamma P.K, CDPO of ICDS Mattancherry by Rev. Dr. Sr. Vinitha, Manager and Provincial Superior.

This new and creative venture will help minimize the usage of plastic toys which are hazardous to the upcoming generation and it is also a small step towards sustainability by reducing, recycling and reusing of unwanted products for a better greener environment. This project also helped the students enhance their social responsibility and commitment.
