PowerTalk on Skill Development and Employability- Mr. Paul Alex; 18 Sep 2018

A guest lecture by Mr. Paul Alex (Chief Technology Officer, Xwards Services Pvt. Ltd) on Skill development and employability was delivered on 18^th September 2018 for students of BMS (Semester V and III). The objective of this guest lecture was to make students understand how to develop requisite skills for employability.

The lecture started where the speaker asked students about the latest skill that they had acquired and helped understand how to build those skills. Asking questions is the most prior attribute in skill development. It is the best way we can learn. Students should try to learn something new every day and make a living out of that skill.  He also identified the need to have a mentor. A teacher can be the best mentor – one who is happy to help in situations and be able to give proper advices to problems. Mentees must be able to share life experiences, wisdom as well as technical expertise to our mentor.

Above all, the most point to be incorporated in student lives is to respect parents and teachers. Respecting is a form of decency that is applied by a person to ensure that they will also receive similar treatment by others whom they rendered their respect. The speaker also enlightened us about the concept known as “elevator pitch” which means short description of an idea, product, company, or oneself that explains the concept in a way such that any listener can understand it in a short period of time. It is a process of spending a couple of moments with investors in an elevator. The aim is to convince the investor and we should be able to grab and hook the attention of the listener..

The speaker then discussed his life journey from being a drop out from NIT Calicut to becoming the chief technology officer of Xwards Services pvt Ltd, the hardships he faced and how he gained success. It is all about doing what we like or we will have to like what we do. The session ended with a question answer round to which queries were resolved and answered. Overall, the session gave the students ample room for thought and reflection
