POST FLOOD ASSESSMENT

Post Flood Survey at Cheranalloor

In Kerala, the 2018 monsoon had brought in one of the worst ever flood we have seen. All the districts in Kerala were affected. Ernakulam is one of the worst affected districts in Kerala. Many houses, buildings, infrastructure were all destroyed and many lives were at threat. The local police and government body along with army and air force were onto the rescue mission. It is estimated that there has been a loss of approximately 20crores in the district. So to properly estimate the damages and losses incurred to people, government has made college students as volunteers to go to the flood affected areas and record the damage. The Economics department of St. Teresa’s College has been a part of this extensive social service programme. The place chosen for the college was cheranalloor village.

The Cheranallor survey began on 15th September, 2018. All the students started from college and reached there by 10a.m. 52 students from 1st DC Economics went for survey on this day under the guidance of Smt. Pearly Antony O, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics. All the students were divided into various groups and each groups were assigned to different wards. Most of the Economics students were assigned to ward 2. The students assigned to a particular ward had to collect, record, and upload various information like personal details, bank details, ID proof etc. The photographs of the damaged wall, floor and roof were also taken. All the information and photographs were then uploaded to the government website using an app “Rebuild Kerala”. Out of nearly 4500 houses, almost 2700 houses were surveyed by the first years on that day.
