On the 18th of November (Friday) 2022, two  Students from BMS IB 2022 Batch Ms. Nasarin Abdul Salim and Ms. Kaveri Ajith Kumar got an opportunity to be amongst the team of 15 students (ED Club members from various departments of St Teresa’s college) along with faculty coordinators. They visited a manufacturing concern named ‘Laa Lees Senzit’ in Choondy, Puthencruz.

Laa Lees Senzit is a manufacturing unit set up in the home of a woman entrepreneur named N.M Leela. Ms. Leela is a retired teacher who aspired to start an enterprise of her own. Starting with the production of hand wash available in three different colors, the business later diversified into floor cleaners, veggie washes, liquid detergents, and dishwashing soaps. This venture came to light through the Startup Village Entrepreneurship Program (SVEP), with the assistance of Kudumbashree.

Starting with a brief overview of the enterprise and how it came to be, Ms. Leela spoke on the various licenses required to set up the enterprise including pollution, panchayat, and commercial licenses. She talked about how constant research and customer feedback are essential for the betterment of the products. The Kudumbashree actively helped in the growth of her business with assistance in matters of queries concerning colour and thickness of the products. They provided the first market for the products as well. Ms. Leela also mentioned that covid had a positive impact on the business as handwashes were required to be provided in bulk to schools.

A question-answer session was arranged to let students clear their queries and quench their curiosity. In response to a request to impart advice to budding entrepreneurs, Ms. Leela highlighted that sincerity on the job and the right mentality are essential. She stated that learning through experience is a part of the process and encouraged students to take up ventures irrespective of the risks involved.

Later, the inventory of products, the workspace, and the filling machine used was shown to the students. The process of making a hand wash was displayed to the students which entails the addition of glycerin for moisturization and scents to enhance the product.

The session concluded with the students handing over a beautiful plant to Ms. Leela as a token of their gratitude. Indeed, great exposure was gained through this industrial visit and the students found it an enlightening one.
