REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES FOR THE YEAR 2018-19
INTERNATIONAL DELEGATE VISIT AND PANEL DISCUSSION
On 27th June 2018, an international delegate visit and panel decision on global career opportunities in Accountancy and Finance was conducted by the Department of Commerce of St. Teresa’s College (Autonomous).
The event started off with the prayer song and The Director and The Principal of the college addressing the gathering. Furthermore, an official exchange of the MoU took place between the school management and the ACCA Senior Leadership Team.
Mr.Khush Ahuja, Head of Business Relations, ACCA;conducted an informative session for the students outlining the different career paths that the students could focus on in the fields of Accountancy and Finance. Afterwards, Ms.Lucia Real-Martin, Director-Emerging Markets, ACCA encouraged the students to take up the course to develop their leadership and communication skills, and for a better future.
The students were grateful for the wonderful opportunity and to Mr.Renjith Varma, Head of Partnership (ACCA); to Mr. Shone Babu, Manager-Strategic Relations (ISDC), and to the College Management for conducting the educative session.
Celebrating World Commerce Education Day by Organising One Day Joint Seminar on Goods & Services Tax (GST) & CA Career Counselling Programme
As a part of World Commerce Education Day, The Department of Commerce of St.Teresa’s College conducted a one day joint seminar on GST & a career counselling programme on 16th November 2018. The objective of the programme was to educate the students on GST & on the possibility of pursuing a career in Chartered Accountancy. The session was attended by several eminent personalities from the field of commerce.
THE COMMERCE ASSOCIATION
The inauguration of the commerce association for the year 2018-19 took place on 13th September 2018 at 2:15 pm in room no.21.The programme started by invoking the blessings of Lord Almighty. The welcome address was delivered by Ms Mary Sruthy Melbin, Academic dean of the commerce department. This was followed by the lighting of the lamp by the dignitaries, thereby officially launching the commerce association. Then, the office bearers were appointed as follows: Vishnupriya Shenoy as the Chairperson, Surya Surendaran as Secretary and Nandita D Menon as the Treasurer. This was followed by the launch of the Department newsletter, ‘Commerce Ripples’. After the formal function, the prize distribution ceremony took place. Finally, the event came to a close with the vote of thanks.

Consumer Club – Flash mob & Drama
As a part of the Consumer Club activities, a drama and flash mob was conducted by the Department Of Commerce (Regular) on 25th January 2019. The flash mob was conducted at 12:00pm in the college campus. The performance was done by the students of II B.Com and III B.com. It was concluded with a banner display containing various messages regarding consumer rights.
A drama was performed by the students of III B.Com. The main theme of the play was about various misleading advertisements and false marketing strategies adopted by multinational companies.
The presentation was simple, lucid and the coordination of the team members was highly commendable. In addition to this, the performances of each of the team members were a real feast to the audience’s eyes.
The act was finally concluded with an effective message on the need for consumer awareness. Thus, through these two activities we got an opportunity to explore various consumer redressal options available and it was a very informative and successful session.
Consumer Club – Case Study Report
As a part of Consumer Club activities, the Department Of Commerce (Regular) conducted a case study illustrating various consumer rights violations. The case studies were presented by the students of II B.Com (Regular) on 23rd January 2019 . The purpose of the presentation was to make the students aware about various consumer rights violations in the society and the remedies available.
Four infamous and distinct case studies were presented, each dealing with goods, services & e-commerce respectively. The case studies were presented by Harsha Varghese, Mishal Susan Correya, Minnu Jeevan, N.Sreevidya and Gini Elizabeth under the leadership of Sandra Maria and Mary Zarina. In addition to the factual descriptions of the case, each of the students shared their personal insights on the issue.
The session was instrumental in making the students know how consumer rights work in the practical scenario. As commerce students it is essential to not only know about our consumer rights but also educate others about their rights and the action they can take when their consumer rights have been violated. The session was finally concluded with words of encouragement from Sandra Maria and it was truly an eye opener.
Consumer Club Seminar on Consumer Rights
In continuation with the Consumer Club initiative, the Department Of Commerce (Regular) conducted a seminar on consumer rights on 23rd January 2019. It was presented by the students of I B.Com. The purpose of the seminar was to shed light on various consumer rights and the need for consumer awareness.
The seminar started with the students explaining what consumer protection is, who is a consumer and the need for such protection. They then moved on to explain the difference between a consumer and a customer and the various malpractices adopted by sellers in the market.
They also explained the legal protection available to consumers, the most important of which was the Consumer Protection Act 1986. The Act was explained in a simple yet comprehensive manner and they also brought to light the various consumer rights. Each of these rights was elucidated by the students and the importance of these rights in the lives of the consumers was also illustrated. All in all, it was a thoroughly enjoyable session and was educational as well.

7TH MARCH 2018: INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON DIGITAL MARKETING
An International seminar on ‘DIGITAL MARKETING’was conducted on 7th March 2018. Mr. Andrin Mendez,CEO and founder of ‘Pling’ served as the chief guest for the day. He inaugurated the function and delivered key note address. The formal function was followed by a technical session on the topic ‘Why digital marketing is important for your future job? by Mr. Andrin Mendez. Vijesh Pillai,CEO and trainer at ‘Kreative sparks’ briefed about search engine optimisation, social media marketing,affiliate marketing and youtube marketing. Varun Chandran , CEO of corporate 360 joined the seminar via video conferencing and suggested several measures India can adopt to fully tap the potential of digital marketing. Technical Session (Paper presentation) was held at the Platinum Jubilee Auditorium. It was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Rajani Bhatt.
22ND FEBRUARY 2018: ‘CALIGO’ –INTER COLLEGIATE QUIZ COMPETITION
The students of the Commerce Department hosted ‘Caligo’ – an inter collegiate quiz competition on 22rd February 2018. the quiz broadly encompassed logos and taglines. 16 teams consisting of two participants each, representing various colleges from Ernakulam participated in the Quiz. First prize: Alex John and Antony Paul – St Albert’s College, Ernakulam and second prize: Jossy Mathew and Ajay Jose – Bharata Mata College, Thrikkakara
Career Orientation for the students in Rural Area in the month of January
As part of Teresian Rural Outreach Programme (TROP), a group consisting of 12 students from the Department of Commerce (Regular), headed by the teacher in charge of TROP, Ms. Ann Thomas Kiriyanthan visited Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Njarakkal on 22 January 2018.
10THJANUARY 2018: INTRA-DEPARTMENT LOGO QUIZ COMPETITION
A Logo quiz competition was conducted by the Department of Commerce on 10.01.2018. It was an Intra-department competition. The event began at 11:45 am in room no 19.The competition was conducted in 2 phases. There were 12 teams of 2 each of which 5 qualified for the second round. In the second phase there was logo quiz as well identify taglines quiz.The competition ended at 12:30 pm. First Prize :Navaneetha G and Anju Narayanan (III B.Com), First runners up: Vishnu Priya and Milka Mary Joseph (I DC B.Com)
15TH DECEMBER 2017: CAREER ORIENTATION
A talk was conducted on the topic, Career development and available career options after the completion of degree, by T.I.M.E institute on 15/12/2017 for final year students.The introductory session was taken by Mr. Suneer, which was continued by Mr. Joby Joseph. The next session was taken by Mr. R. Krishnan; an IIM passed out, on the topic ‘Interview Basics for Campus Recruitment’.
14TH DECEMBER 2017: CAREER GUIDANCE PROGRAMME
A class was conducted for the III B.Com students on the topic CPA and CMA on 14.12.2017. The faculties from the Miles Education Institute explained about various aspects of CPA and CMA. Miles Education Institute is associated with around 21 Corporates and 17 Universities.
FACULTY ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME ON 11TH DECEMBER 2017
The introduction of Goods and Services Tax Act by replacing Value Added Tax created many doubts in the minds of the consumers. So as a part of Consumer Club activity the Department of Commerce undertook the responsibility to arrange a session to clear the doubts on GST and to make the concepts clearer to the faculty, students and the consumers in general. A Faculty Enrichment Programme was conducted by the Department of Commerce for the faculty of various colleges in Kerala, 11th December 2017 in the Arts Block Auditorium. The session was led by C A Soman N. L, Chartered Accountant.
Sri.CA. Soman N L, M.Com; FCA is the Convenor of the Study Group for “Goods and Services Tax” in the state of Kerala, constituted by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), New Delhi. He is a Faculty of the ICAI on GST. He has More than 20 years of experience in Indirect Tax matters, such as Central Excise, Customs, Import/Export, Service Tax, SEZ, Foreign Trade Policy provisions, etc. He serves as the Speaker in Study Circle / CPE meetings of the ICAI branches and other Professional Bodies and Associations. He also acts as the faculty for the training programme for the Excise Commissionerate Officers. Currently he is working with M/s. Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, Kochi Refinery as Chief Manager (Projects).
24TH NOVEMBER 2017: REPORT OF CONSUMER CLUB ACTIVITIES
The Consumer Club of St Teresa’s College was inaugurated on 24th November, 2017 by Adv. A Rajesh, former President of Consumer Redressal Forum, Ernakulam. He is a well-known consumer activist and has been serving in the consumer court for many years. The formal function started with a prayer song followed by welcome speech rendered by MsDeepa G, II B.Com, Dept of Commerce (Regular). The official inauguration of the Consumer club was performed by the Chief Guest. He delivered a talk on the topic “Consumer rights and its protection” in a telling and enlightening manner. He highlighted the consequences of the misleading advertisements fabricated by profit crazy producers. The concrete examples listed out by him were more than evidences for how the consumers are being exploited. He also stressed that the consumers should be really conscious of their rights and be very vigilant. Further, he gave information regarding the various mechanisms for the redressal of consumer grievances under Consumer Protection Act. . The meeting concluded with the vote of thanks accorded by Ms Angela Mony of III B.Com.
1ST JUNE 2017: ELECTION FOR THE OFFICE BEARERS OF THE COMMERCE ASSOCIATION 2017-2018.
The first meeting of the commerce association for the academic year 2017-18 was held on 01-06-2017.The event started by invoking the blessings of Lord Almighty followed by welcome address by Vanessa D’cruz of second year B.Com. After that Ms. Mary Sruthy Melbin ,the former HOD in her speech announced that Ms.Jency Treesa is the HOD for academic year 2017-18. Miss. Jency Treesa addressed the students . In her speech she said that the Commerce association would be functioning under the guidance of the staff advisor Miss. Elizabeth Rini for this academic year. Subsequently, the former office bearers of commerce association Rahmath Fathima S.I ,Dhanya Moorthy and Ageesha Anilkumar briefed about the responsibility of each member . Elections were held thereafter. Students for the post Secretary, Joint Secretary and Treasurer were elected from Second year students. Out of five nominees the office bearers were elected through voting. Deepa.G, Roma Sebastian and Lakshmipriya K.S of Second year B.com were elected as Secretary, Joint secretary and Treasurer respectively. The function was concluded with vote of thanks by Aleeta Ann Joseph of III B.Com.
5TH JUNE 2017: BEST OF WASTE
On June 5th 2017, as part of THE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY, the Department of Commerce had conducted an exhibition “THE BEST OF WASTE” based on recycling of waste material into usable products.
Students from different departments had participated .The competition was conducted at two levels, the inter department & intra department .Among the inter department competition Malavika K.S of II DC History was given the first prize & Tania Mathai of II B.Sc Computer Application was given the second prize. In the intra department competition Sneha M.G of III B.com was given the first prize & Divya Tomy Kattikaran of II B.com was given the second prize.
8TH JUNE 2017: ORIENTATION ON FOUNDATION PROGRAMME IN BANKING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES
On 8th of June 2017, a team from “Hedge School Of Applied Economics” visited the Department of Commerce of St.Teresa’s College. The team was led by Mr.Arjun Manikandan, who is the Relationship Manager of the institution. Their aim was to provide an introductory session to a certificate course that they offer. The course comprises of 3 main subjects; Banking , Insurance & Financial Services . It is a 30 hours course which offers practical expertise and exposure to students. The course also provides placement assistance and a certificate of accomplishment. Overall, the session was extremely informative & enlightened the students about various available courses.
12TH JUNE 2017: PROJECT ORIENTATION
On 12th June 2017 a class was taken by Dr.Vineeth K M ,Assistant Prof. Maharajas College on ‘How to prepare the project for 3rd year B.com (regular) Students’ at St. Teresa’s College Ernakulam. The class was a guiding light for the preparation for a project. He briefed the students on the different topics available, the tools needed for the preparation, how to create a good project etc. He also inspired the student community to choose a topic out of our own interest and passion and try out topics which no one has tried yet. The class was informative with regard to the sources; we could refer help in our project. He even gave us tips on using MS Excel, which would be helpful in making our project. The class was really informative.
23RD JUNE 2017: CAREER GUIDANCE
A seminar on “Career as Company Secretary” was conducted for the II B.Com class, by the subject expert Dr. K.H.Shajahan, Department of corporate affairs ,Govt of India and Prof.Lijo faculty member of ICSI[The institute of company secretaries of India] on 23rd June 2017. The welcome speech was delivered by Ms. Kesiya Mary of II B.Com. The talk started with an interactive session with the students by Dr.Shajahan ,where he told the students about the different careers available in commerce stream ie,CA,CMA,CS and why CS is the most attractive .He explained the importance as well as the benefit of taking CS as the career option. It was an interactive and vibrant session where the students were given an opportunity to clarify doubts regarding their career. Vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Arya.S of II B.Com. It was an informative session.
4TH JULY 2017: COMMERCE ASSOSIATION 2017-18
Commerce association 2017-18 was inaugurated on 4th July 2017 at 10:30am in the Arts block auditorium.
The Inauguration started by invoking the blessings of Almighty. Welcome speech was delivered by Ms. Meenu Varghese, Commerce association Chaiperson, PG Department and the chief guest was welcomed by giving a book as a token of gratitude. Ms.Vanessa Maria D’cruz of II DC B.com gave an introduction about our chief guest Dr. P.V John. The Association was inaugurated by Dr P.V John sir by lighting the lamp. Dr P.V John addressed the gathering and also led a motivational talk for the students and other members who were gathered for the programme. Ms. Deepa.G, The Commerce Association Secretary, delivered the vote of thanks.
The inauguration of the Commerce Association marks the beginning of all activities of the Commerce Department for the Academic year 2017-18.
26TH JULY 2017: ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION-IMPACT OF GST ON CONSUMERS IN INDIA
An essay writing competition was conducted by the Department of Commerce on 26/7/2017 on the topic “Impact of GST on Consumers In India”. The competition was held in Room No.21. Students from different departments were invited. The competition began at 11.45 am, it was held for duration of 40 minutes. 11 students from various department participated in the event. The event was conducted successfully.
26TH JULY 2017: ORIENTATION
On 26th of July 2017 an orientation was conducted for the I B.Com regular students, by the Logic School of Management who gave guidelines to the CA ,CS,CMA and ACCA aspirants . The resource person Mr.Gabby and Mr.Sreenath made us realize the importance of a profession in our carrier. The orientation was conducted in II B.Com class.
As most of the students were CA aspirants, they deeply gave details about the wide chances and demand for a chartered accountant in the next 5 years. They explained that demand for any finance course in the present scenario is very high. If one likes mugging up theories, Company Secretary Course is the best and suitable option. They explained in detail regarding the Chartered Accountant and Company Secretary course, their exam procedure, registration procedure etc. They quoted that CA course offered by ICAI has being ranked no. 2 worldwide and certified public accountant course is ranked no. 1 worldwide.
By the end of the session, Ms. Aaliya of I B.Com delivered the vote of thanks. Doubts and queries of each student were cleared at the end. The orientation will definitely help the students in marking our future a way better.
1ST AUGUST 2017: CAREER COUNSELLING PROGRAMME
On 01-8-2017 the Department of Commerce arranged a career counselling programme sponsored by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India [ICAI] for the III B.Com students in room no.18. The programme started at 11am. The resource persons were Mr.C.A. Roy Varghese and Ms. Jyothi. N. Kutty. The resource person Mr. Roy Varghese explained the importance of a professional degree along with normal curriculum of B.Com. He explained how one can pursue professional education without affecting the normal degree course. He conveyed how a professional degree is important in the competitive world. The session was interesting and informative.
8TH AUGUST 2017: ORIENTATION-CERTIFICATE COURSES
The Department of Commerce organized a talk on various certificate courses on 08-08-2017 in room no.21 for the whole B.Com students. The talk was conducted by Mr Pradeep Chandrasekharan founder and director of Finmark Trainees India pvt ltd along with a faculty member. Mr Pradeep briefly explained students regarding the benefits of being financially literate.They offer add on courses which provide certificates having SEBI approval. This certificate course was offered in such a way that this course could be completed along normal curriculum. The programme was conducted successfully.
14TH AUGUST 2017: ORIENTATION PROGRAMME
On 14-8-2017, the Department of Commerce conducted a class on Certified Management Accounting [CMA] for the II and III B. Com students at 1 pm in room no. 21. It was conducted by the faculty members of Vidyarupa School of Management Studies.
They briefed the students on the topics covered under the course and the fee structure and the various benefits accruing out of the course. They also talked about the global career opportunities that CMA offers. They offered to help the students to improve their knowledge, skills, expertise and competence in finance and business.
The talk ended at 2 pm with proposal of vote of thanks by Deepa .G. The session was interesting and informative.
