Alumnae lecture series-3 :- CHARACTER IS STRENGTH

The department of Mathematics and Statistics organised a session on “Character is Strength” on 1 December 2022. The speakers for this session were Dr. Susan John (Rtd. Prof., Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam and President of Alumnae Council), Dr. Mary Metilda (Rtd. Principal, Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam), Smt. Chandrika Paramaeswaran (Rtd. Officer, State Bank of India) and Smt. Sharatha R. (Rtd. Officer, Indian Overseas Bank). The session emphasised the importance of having a good character and how one can thrive in life.

Opening Remarks and introduction of the session was given by Dr. Susan John. She took out a few examples from the Mahabharata and Marie Curie to illustrate her points about reliability, worthwhileness and strengthening of character. Dr. Mary Metilda discussed the importance of honesty and sincerity, two crucial values for an individual. In order to illustrate the value of being honest with oneself, despite discomfort, she used an anecdote from her time as a professor. With honesty, we combine reliability, commitment and openness. Smt. Chandrika Paramaeswaran also discussed the significance of character strength while reciting verses from The Bhagavad Gita in Sanskrit. Smt. Sharatha R. presented herself as an illustration to demonstrate how character strength interventions might assist people in using their character strengths in their own lives. She acquired skills in embroidery and flower-making through self-training. She brought a few of her embroidery works to the session.
