“A Travel through Indian painting- Mural Art”

Workshop on Mural Painting

The Department of Fashion Designing organized a workshop on Mural Painting by Shri. ARUN GOPAL– National Fellow in Mural Painting and Sculptor on 7th November 2018.

The word ‘mural’ is derived from the Latin word ‘murus’, meaning ‘wall’. The murals of Kerala evolved through the significant influences of ancient Dravidian rituals like Kalamezhuthu and Patayani. The masterpieces of Kerala mural art include: the Shiva Temple in Ettumanoor, the Ramayana murals of Mattancherry Palace and Vadakkumnatha kshetram.

The murals palette consists of five colours or Panchvarna namely, yellow, red, green, black and white, prepared from mineral pigments and vegetables. The themes are depicted using common iconographic symbols from the Puranas like Ramayana and Mahabharata from the Hindu mythology, which is illustrated highly with brilliance stylistically. The expressions are depicted with artistic mastery. The common themes are of various incarnations Vishnu, Ganesha, and manifestations of Siva. The order of colouring starts with yellow.

This workshop helped the entire participants to gain deep knowledge about the specialty of Mural painting.
