National Service Scheme (N.S.S.)

2015-16

The National Service Scheme aims at developing student’s personality through community service. Ms. Noumin K.N. and Ms. Aniya have been elected as the NSS volunteer secretaries for the academic year 2015-16. Dr. Nisha Vikraman, Dept. of Home Science and Dr. Sajitha Kurup from the Dept. of Sociology are the Program Officers.

St. Teresa’s College was awarded the Best NSS Unit under the Mahatma Gandhi University. Ms. Rose Mary from the Dept. of English was awarded the Best NSS Volunteer at the University and state level.

An Intercollegiate training workshop on eco friendly bag making was organized for N. S. S volunteers as part of World Environment Day on 5 June. An amount of Rs. 38,660/- was collected under the initiative of the NSS unit for the heart and lung transplantation of Kum. Ambily Fathima, MCom student of CMS College, Kottayam. The unit conducted a mini-camp from 31 July to 2 August 2015. On 11 August 2015 a Blood Donation camp was organised in collaboration with the Cochin South Rotary Club.

The NSS volunteers participated in the ‘Walkathon’ by Canserve to spread awareness regarding fighting cancer with a positive vigour. They also celebrated the International Day of Older Persons on 1 October along with ‘Vayomitram’, Scheme of Social Security Mission at Townhall, Fort Kochi. Taking into stride the slogan, ‘Clean India, Green India’ the NSS volunteers embarked on a cleaning campaign of the Boat Jetty, Ernakulam on 2 October 2015.

The NSS unit joined hands with ‘Canserve’, an NGO working for cancer patients in the ‘Locks for Hope’ campaign which focussed on donating hair for cancer patients.

NSS volunteers imbibed the spirit of organic farming and took initiative by promoting pesticide free vegetables in the adopted village community of Ochanthuruth, Vypin.

The volunteers presented a street play for creating awareness about the evil side of Drug abuse .

NSS – 2014-’15

172 students joined the National Service Scheme this academic year bringing the strength of the NSS to 349 in all. As part of the Navathi celebrations, the NSS organised 90 programmes and activities which included the organic farming initiative, the harvesting of pokkali crop at Pizhala, palliative care walkathons, workshop on cloth bag making, power point presentation on e-waste management, AIDS awareness street plays etc. Environment Day and Ozone Day awareness activities were conducted in association with Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment. Six students represented the M.G. university at various camps around the country. Thoolika Suresh was adjudged Best Female Camper at the pre- Republic Day Camp. Rosemary and Dhanya Devasia were selected to the Special Adventure Camp at Atal Bihari Vajapayi Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Himachal Pradesh, Haritha M.S to the Bangalore National Camp, and Anjusha S and Divya represented the university at the Assam National Cultural Fest.

The College has a committed N.S.S. Wing. It is a voluntary organisation for the students and teachers to involve in rural development programme and to participate in the socio-economic life of the community. The participants get a chance to develop a sense of Nation through corporate living and co-operative action. Volunteers who undergo the prescribed course of training will be given certificates from the University. 10 marks as grace marks in University examinations for NSS certificate holders of all classes and bonus marks for admissions to higher courses – 15 marks for Degree Course and 5 marks for P.G. course.The College community is a major donor of blood to Indian Medical Association (IMA).

Activities for 2013-14 The activities of the NSS Unit began with Ms. Gayathri S Kumar, NSS volunteer receiving a sapling from former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, when he visited our campus on 4th June 2013 to plant on Environment Day, 5th June 2013. This was a glorious start for the ongoing NSS activities.
