The Department of Sociology, established in 1966 under the dynamic leadership of Sr. Marie Cecile CSST, is celebrating its Golden Jubilee this year.
The celebrations began with a Thanksgiving Mass offered on 20 July 2016. 40 students and 9 faculty members heralded the Holy Mass with an entrance procession. Fr. Liju Mathirappilly who offered the Mass gave an inspiring sermon. The STARS led the offertory. Sweets were distributed to all the students of the department. After the Holy Mass the faculty and STARS gathered for lunch.
The formal inauguration of the Golden Jubilee was on 27 July 2016 by Dr. Fr. Jose Kuriedath CMI, Manager and former Principal of Sacred Heart College. Fr. Kuriedath was also the head of the Department of Sociology at Sacred Heart College and recalled his association with the Department at St. Teresa’s. He also exhorted the students to be ongoing learners, and to make use of the sociological frameworks they learnt for the benefit of society.
The Director Dr. Sr. Vinitha who rendered the Presidential address mentioned her interactions with alumni who would declare that they were proud to be a student at the department of sociology, and also noted the recent trend of students increasingly taking up sociology with the aim of preparing for the civil service exams. Dr. Claramma Thomas, former Head of the Department retraced the steps of the department from its inception. The Principal Dr. Sajimol Augustine offered her felicitations.
The youngest members of our department, students from I BA Sociology performed a folk song.
In connection with the inauguration, final year PG students of the department put up a poster exhibition on Social Change and Development around the World.
