Department of Zoology

Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology came into existence in 1961 under the leadership of the former Principal, Late Mother Digna and headed by the ever-enthusiastic Rev. Sr. Carmelita CSST. Zoology comprises the study of animals and their behaviours. The subject helps in acquiring a great insight into animal behaviour, the way they live, their needs, and many more things. Zoology deals with the environment of the animals, how they adapt to the changing environment and their needs like nutrition, genetics, characteristics, evolution, physiology, reproduction, development etc. The subjects also include the study of modern techniques like biotechnology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, microbiology etc. for an in-depth understanding of the zoological world. With the imbalance in the ecosystem today, the acute need has been felt to preserve nature and even animals that are on the brink of extinction.

The Department offers M.Sc. Zoology with Molecular Biology as special paper. The Department also offers B.Sc. Zoology Main course, as well as Zoology as a subsidiary subject for B.Sc. Botany and Home Science courses. The year 2010-11 was celebrated as the Golden Jubilee Year of the department.

To live harmoniously in the web of life
  • To inspire students to reach the frontiers of Biological Sciences.
  • To develop research aptitude and a scientific temper.
  • To develop an aptitude for understanding nature and its rich biodiversity.
  • To acquire knowledge on the taxonomic status of various animals and its relationship to man.
  • To appreciate the correlation between the structure and function of organisms.
  • To bring about an awareness of health related problems, its prevention and cure.

Message from HOD

Zoology, the study of animals truly represents the most challenging and exciting frontier in science. The 21st century has been termed the Century of Biology, with biomedical, biotechnological, biodiversity and environmental issues at the forefront of nearly every facet of our society. Zoology provides the core for understanding and addressing these problems, from the cellular and molecular to the ecosystem and landscape levels of complexity. Zoology forms a natural bridge to other disciplines such as Chemistry, Psychology, Sociology, Medicine, Botany, Geography and Anthropology. Within the Department, students experience the depth of Zoology in the classroom, laboratory, and in the field. We have vibrant and interactive faculty, committed to excellence in education, and are proud of the outstanding students and dedicated staff who make this possible. Students are actively engaged in projects in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biofouling, and Ecology under the guidance of expert faculties in the Department.

It is an exciting time to be a Zoologist – join us! If you are interested in the learning about animals and want hands-on learning and career opportunities, then Department of Zoology, St. Teresa’s college is the right choice for you.
