As part of the Student Enrichment Programme and the World Environment Day celebrations of the college, a one-day UGC sponsored seminar on the topic ‘Biodiversity Conservation Envisaging Ecosystem Changes’ was conducted by the Department of Botany, St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam for the Degree, Post Graduate students and Research Scholars on 28.06.2016 at 9.30 am in the Department of Botany. Student Representatives of the neighboring colleges also took part. Eminent Environmentalist and Chief Guest Sri. Neelakandan C. R. delivered the inaugural address and spoke on the topic. He convinced the students about the need for interconnectivity and interdependence between the living beings on earth and the importance of nurturing and protecting the linksof this connected world to maintain ecological balance. Saplings of fruit trees and avenue trees were distributed to parents and students. Dr. C M Joy, Retd. Professor in Botany and renowned Environmentalist, also delivered a valuable lecture on Biodiversity Conservation.
On 24-08-2016, Department of Botany in association with the Kerala Botanical society organized Dr.V.J.Dominic Endowment Intercollegiate M.Sc. Dissertation Competition.
Talk on Career and Higher Education Perspectives of VBotany students was organized on 01-12-2016. The resource person was Prof. Ebin P.J., Asst.Professor, Dept. of Botany, Sacred Heart College (Autonomous), Thevara
On 08-12-2016, an Exhibition cum Seminar was conducted in connection with the International Year of Pulses. The seminar topic was “Pulses- Nutritional seeds for a sustainable future”. The resource person was Dr.P.S. John, Professor (Agronomy), Retd., Kerala Agricuture University, Mannuthy. . In the after noon session, a talk on terrace gardening was conducted for the home makers. Dr. A.R.S. Vadhyar, Managing Trustee, Yasoram Charitable Society, a renowned entrepreneur and architect, was the resource person. It was attended by the mothers of III DC and Sc. Botany students. In the exhibition, the students exhibited a vast array of products and curios made using various types of pulses . The salad dressing competition Kosambari and Jewelery making competition using pulses were conducted in the after noon in which the students participated with much enthusiasm.
The Department participated in the Homeo Darsan Seminar cum Exhibition conducted by the Association of Homeopaths Kerala (DISHA) from 07-1-2017 to 08-1-2017. A stall of around 100 medicinal plants was set up by the Dept. , which was well appreciated by the visitors.
PROGRMMES ATTENDED BY THE STUDENTS
Minu Jose and Archana T A of second PG Botany participated in the National Seminar, Swadeshi Science Congress held at CMFRI, Cochin on 7th, 8th and 9th November 2016. They presented papers titled ‘Potential Therapeutic Application of Averrhoa bilimbi and Averrhoa carambola L.’ and ‘Production and Recovery of Citric Acid by Organism Isolated from Orange Peel’ respectively at the Science Congress.
Glaxy Ezekel V and Minu Jose of second PG Botany participated in the seminar on ‘Need for Conservation of Fisheries resources’ held in connection with World Fisheries Day -2016, by ICAR-CIFT Cochin on 21st November 2016 and participated in the Inter Collegiate Quiz competition.
The students of first PG Botany attended a National seminar at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam on 29th and 30th Nov 2016. The seminar was entitled ‘Glimpses into the diversity of lower groups of plants’.
The students of second PG botany (11 students) attended a national seminar at Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha on 2nd December 2016. The seminar was entitled ‘Observance of International Year of Pulses’ funded by KSCSTE, Govt. of Kerala. Two students, Anju Rani George and Glaxy Ezekel V participated in the Inter Collegiate Salad Dressing competition ‘Kosambari’ held as part of the seminar.
