The Department of Zoology came into existence in 1961 under the leadership of the former Principal, Late Mother Digna and headed by the ever enthusiastic Rev. Sr. Carmelita CSST. Zoology comprises the study of animals and their behaviors. The subject helps in acquiring a great insight on the animal behavior, the way they live, their needs, and many more things. Zoology deals with the environment of the animals, how they adapt to the changing environment and their needs like nutrition, genetics, characteristics, evolution, physiology, reproduction, development etc. The subjects also include the study of modern techniques like biotechnology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, microbiology etc. for an in-depth understanding of the zoological world. With the imbalance in the ecosystem today, acute need has been felt to preserve nature and even animals that are on the brink of extinction.
The Department offers MSc Zoology with Molecular Biology as special paper. The Department also offers B.Sc. Zoology Main course, as well as Zoology as a subsidiary subject for B.Sc. Botany and Home Science courses.
Post Graduate course in Zoology started in the year 2015. The specialization of the course is Molecular Biology.
The Graduate course in Zoology commenced in the year 1961.B.Sc. Zoology Main Course with Botany and Chemistry as complementary course, as well as Zoology as a subsidiary/complementary subject for B.Sc Botany and Home Science programmes.
Open Course in Human Genetics, Nutrition, Community Health and Sanitation
For admission into bachelor’s degree one should pass higher secondary education or 10+2 from a recognized board with science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and in one of the Math’s subjects.. The duration for this program is of 3 years.
For admission in to master’s degree one should have completed their bachelor’s degree in zoology with 50% marks and above. The duration for this program is of 2 years.
The Department of Zoology is well equipped with four diversified Laboratories for performing UG and PG Zoology Practical and research activities. Laboratory facilities, includes space for teacher demonstrations, student laboratory activities, student discussion, and safe storge space for supplies. The department facilitates a compilation of four Labs, including main lab for Core Practicals, a Zoology sub lab for Complementary practicals, one Computer Lab for Bioinformatics Practicals and a common Instrumentation Lab with instruments for Microbiology and Molecular biology Practicals. The labs have charts, models and audio-video aids which enhance and enrich the learning process.
The department has to its credit a well equipped air –conditioned Instrumentation Lab. The available facilities include sophisticated laboratory equipments such as UV- Visible spectrophotometer , PCR Machine, Flame Photometer, Colony Counter, High Speed Centrifuge, Laminar Airflow chamber, Autoclave, Hot air Oven, Incubator, Rotary evaporator, Phase contrast microscope, Binocular stereo microscopes , Trinocular research microscopes with Micro photographic facility, dissection microscopes, Electronic balance, pH meter, Refrigerator, Microbial colony counter, Rotary vacuum evaporator etc., to name a few.
The computer laboratory is equipped with 5 computer units with LAN Server, NET Server& internet connection is operating round the clock, with in the college premises to help the students and staff. The systems are also installed with softwares like PHYLIP, RASMOL etc. for Bioinformatics practical’s.
The Department keeps pace with technology in the new IT enabled class rooms with LCD, Laptops, Smart- Boards and Over Head Projectors.
A separate Department library is one of our major assets. The library is well maintained with over 3500 books. It has Advanced books, 11 Research Journals and 3 E-Journals.
The Department also has a well maintained museum having around 3000 specimens of diverse animals belonging to various phyla.
